An SVT stock would be better bang for your buck than a modded zx3. When you mod something, you usually loose reliability.

Well I've been doing some more research and looking around and I think I'll actually go with a ZX3 with a 2.3L. It gets better mpg and doesn't require premium fuel, and where I live that will save me about $650 a year in gas prices alone. I can also get one for cheaper.

When my car was totally stock I was getting between 25 and 26 mpg and I have a 50 mile one way drive to work that is basically all 4 lane. with a few mods and Tom's tune I am getting 29 to 30 mpg now.

Keep in mind that 5-speed D23 ZX3s are very rare, even more so than an SVT. Stock for stock, the SVT is the fastest Focus (other than the new ST) in the corners and in a straight line. They also have better brakes and better interior. Gas and insurance will be a bit more expensive, and they require premium. FWIW I average around 29 mpg in mostly highway driving.

If you're going to mod it, the 2.3 responds much better than the Zetec, SVT or not, so it's arguably a better platform to start with. If staying stock, I'd say SVT. There's just something special about them.

And as I've told other folks, give the Mazda3 hatch a look. Stronger 2.3 comes standard and has great handling, with a nicer interior. Road noise, gas mileage, and upfront cost are drawbacks.
