yup thats what it is, technically, but whether it actually functions as that, is debatable, id think more than likely theres some truth to it

from what i see on the stock pulley and flywheel is that there is NO counterweight installed so that means that the focus is INTERNALLY balanced.

The only "balancing" that thing does is to keep vibrations from being transferred to the accesories. The Zetec is internally balanced. That rubber ring on the stock crank pulley is basically just there to extend accessory belt life.

Sorry, that isn't true. Most all engines have a harmonic balancer. This has nothing to do with the balance of the rotating mass, but to "balance" the harmonics made by the power stroke of the engine. Without the harmonic balancer, the crank would eventually crack. The rubber flexes with the power stroke, absorbing the harmonics, or pulse shocks in the crank. Piston aircraft engines accomplish the same thing with weights and bushings to allow the weights to move slightly on the crank. but that would be to noisey for a auto engine. So the rubber insulation works fine.

I just looked at the ebay picture. So when you do a UDP, you have to keep the harmonic balacner off????? I won't do UDP for sure if that is so

Harmonic means noise right. So it has something to do with the noise created by the engine right?

thats the stock crank pulley for sale, the harmonic balancer is just a rubber ring inside it.

from what ive gathered from ford and a couple shops that do a lot of work with balancing and cranks and whatnot its more complicated then u think. we talked about it in a dif thread. anyway, the rubber ring is a very specific thickness and hardness to match frequencies and vibrations to keep the crank from being damaged. without it, its very possible to see long term damage. but i havent seen a focus with a udp on it any longer than a couple years. definately no longer than 4 though obviously. i read up on a vw site that had a couple of reports from cranks being trashed from udp after about 40k ill see if i can find a source to back that up but i stumbled onto it on accident last week.
