How do you return a CAR!?

It aint a sweatshirt from JcPenny so what am I supposed to do? The car is just a rolling hunkj of crap to me now. Aof the other day when I had to make a panis stop (oh yeah I paniced alright) both fronts locked up and came almost to a complete stop. THe catch is that the car managed to stall during the maneuver...and its not a manual transmission. Im thinking it has something to do with the sudden locking of the wheels with the car in gear but even so there are other areas of the car sorely lacking in workmanship. The interio panels dont fit, and one has developed a nasty squeek, I have to blare my music to cover it up. The CD player skips over smooth ground (on a brand new CD no less) it also pauses for a second or two inbetween every song, even if the two tracks run together. And it does the stall deal if you pause as you shift through neutral to put it into drve or reverse at times (like you might do if you realized you were about the put the car in drive but were still moving in reverse a little). Oh and its a 2005...you guys are the most knowledgeable Ive seen abotu the focus and almost the most on Ford...suggestions? comments?

oh man, i don't envy you at all. returning a car is darned near impossible from what i hear. i mean, you could go complain and get all of these things looked at under warranty? personally, i'd go in there and make a loud fit about it until they do what you want them to. i seriously hope that you get this all worked out man, good luck!

I second that motion. California in particular is a bitch to return a car because there is a "no cooling off period" law in Cali. Basically once you take it and sign it, it is yours. There are lemon laws in Cali, but you have to have the exact same repair done 3 times or more. So basically like talonk4 said you need to go in and see what you can do warranty wise. Hope it works out for you.

A car is not like an item you buy at a retail store. As the poster above me said, there is no cooling off period. You don't get to try it out and then if you don't like it simply bring it back for a refund. I'm guessing this is your first major purchase. Welcome to the wonderful world of automobile buying. You're going to get a quick education on things like depreciation, warranty coverage, and the lemmon law. I say you become knowledgeable on all three before deciding to sell your car or trade it in.

Also, your brakes locking up sounds to me like you bought a Focus without ABS. The brakes on the Focus are just fine, you experienced the symptoms of trying to panick stop without them. Time and time again the argument against ABS being necessary always gets thrown out the window when people have an accident because they didn't have ABS. For now the bean counters at Ford have determined that the typical customer would rather pay less for the Focus than pony up the money for ABS and side airbags, so unless you special order a Focus it's probable that you won't get one from the dealership with those options. By 2008 cars will be required to have side airbags and side curtains, probably ABS too. Why anyone would drive a car without ABS and side airbags as a minimum in this day and age of the SUV is beyond me.

Sounds like you didn't do your homework on this purchase. You bought a car without researching your options, and your contractual agreement. Now you don't like it. This will be an expensive lesson for you getting out of the car and into something else, but hopefully you will learn from it.

Sounds like most of this is just user-error. Sorry that you are displeased with the vehicle.

What year is it? Is there a warranty? If so, use it. I have used mine for the idler pulley and the rust on the body. That's why they give it to you. There are lemons though and thats why there is a lemon law. Sorry to hear of the problems though.

He said it's a 2005 and I agree with 007 about the brakes...have you contacted the dealer about the other problems yet?

2 Options:

1) Fight the Stealership to fix all the problems (Good Person)

2) Wash & Wax and sell (the problems) to someone else. (Bad Person)

I could have sworn I read something about cars without ABS stopping sooner than cars equipped with it... ABS allows one to maintain control of a vehicle when stopping suddenly, which helps avoid accidents.

I kinda believe it too because suppose the roads are packed with snow and you have to brake suddenly. The snow would build up in front of the tire on a non-ABS equipped car, helping it stop. Now if the car had ABS, it would detect lockup and would kick in increasing the stopping distance even if the brake pedal was down all the way. I dunno how to explain it, but that is something similar to what I read.

How long have you owned this vehicle? If you've only been in it a short time, like less than a month, I'd say you might have a chance @ the dealership - at least on a trade. The squeaky wheel always gets fixed first so you need to be making noise. The longer you wait, the worse your chances will be. Worst case, you make the dealer honor the warranty on every single minor detail and be sure they put you in a nice rental during the fix(es).

Good luck.
