Front Wheel Drive and Snow

I live in South Florida and have a 2004 ZX3 and an 2001 Explorer. Used to live up north 20 plus years ago. I am going up at christmas and was wondering which vehicle I should take on the trip. The ZX3 will get better gas mileage for sure.

I used to drive in the snow all the time when I lived there - always rear-wheel drive. I was told that front-wheel drive is better in the snow. Never drove a front-wheel drive in the snow.

Any thoughts or reccomendations?

If the ZX3 has good tires on it, you will be fine. I'm guessing you have the stock Pirellis that aren't worn out at all.

Just remember that instead of your car fish tailing, if it looses traction, its just gonna go in a straight line no matter which way u turn :)

I would drive the Explorer. If you're careful, the Focus would be fine in the snow, but the Explorer will do better. It won't stop any quicker, though, so make sure to give yourself plenty of room to stop.

I do have stock Pirellis with very good tread. I won't be in the market for new tires by then so all weather tires are out of the question (for now).

Good advice on the fish tailing, Jb 10Fan - I didn't think of that... like I said, I'm used to rear wheel driving in the snow.

Lil_Red - I'm going to Connecticut.

Thanks for your comments.

I only feel an Explorer would be better if it was 1ft+ unplowed roads you are driving through, or iced over roads. Both being conditions one should normally stay home in. Just my opinion

Unless you are going to visit friends that live at the end of a 6 mile un-ploughed road...drive the Focus, if you have plans to go out ice fishing and driving through snow banks...bring the Exploder.
If it is too snowy out for the Focus...you should think about staying in and finding some indoor activities anyway.
Cheers.
