looking at going car shopping. Possible mazda material.

Due to the bad luck I'm having with the post zetec swap. I'm going to sell my ranger to clear out the garage to make room to park the focus to give me time to go over it over the winter. Thus with the help of my in-laws and the money from the ranger we are looking at buying a new(used) car cause we have nothing else.

I've recently taken an interest in mazda I've been looking at possibly getting 2003ish mazda 6 or mazda 3. Why around 2003? I don't want to spend more than 5k. Plus I don't want to go lower than the year of my focus.

Is there any certain years or models I should stay away from. Is there any issues I should keep an eye out for? I've never heard any thing bad about mazda which is why I'm considering it. It's either that or another focus with a zetec. But to be honest kinda board with focus right now.

I really like the the Mazda3 HB.

Stay away from the V-6 Mazda 6 from that era. They PCV valve is very hard to access, and when it goes bad, it causes sudden and extreme engine oil consumption issues with eventual catestrophic failure. Some go all their lives without this issue, and some crater at 60,000 miles. It's a crapshoot.

I had a 2004 3i with the 2.0 and loved it. The 3S 2.3 is only good for 12 more hp, but is better equipped. Fuel system purge valves were problematic, but quickly resolved in the early years of the generation. Happy Hunting!

I don't have any constructive advice for you, but I can understand wanting a Mazda3 from that era. Even the sedans look damn sharp, maybe better than the hatches. Even if price were no consideration the older ones are better looking cars, to me, and their handling and refinement (for the money) was class leading at the time. I say go for it.

Yea I too like the body style we almost bought a mazda 6 sedan when we was car shopping before, but we bought the focus instead. The only reason our credit wasn't the greatest and the mazda didn't fall under the criteria of the loan we could get. Now the focus is paid off and our credit is in good standing not awesome but pretty good. So we are going to give it another try.

Definitely go for the 3. A friend of mine has the HB, and the few times ive ridden in it, I've been impressed. But I have heard great things about the sedan as well

depends on what you're going for, Fuel economy or performance? I have a 2006 6i for the wife & she loves it. Sunroof, power window/locks, spoiler. The main thing that i don't like about it, is the lock of power. Handles great, rides good, looks good, but won't get out of its own way. It's got the 2. 3L 4 cylinder in it, but cruising at highway speeds, it around 3,000 rpms. It gets ok mileage on highway, around 30 & around 24 in the city. The 2.3L is roughly the same as the focus 2.3.

the 3.0 V6 is roughly the dohc in the taraus, some changes in both. More power, but much less in mpg's. They have hatches too & they have wipers on the rear glass as a giveaway.

The 3 is around the same class as the focus, just a little bit better quality, with different engine options. The 3i is a 2.0 duratec & the 3s is a 2.3 duratec. The s usually has more options available to it than the i.

i have another 2.3L duratec with a tiny air compressor on it that makes the car much fun to drive, but my mpg's suffer some. Got 23.9mpg on the trip down south this weekend, including the spirited driving parts

I had a feeling you would chim in devon. I really like blue 6 that's exactly what we looked at before we bought the focus, except it was silver. I really like the rx8 wheels on there too. I'd like to give the 2.3 a try I think.

Gas milage isn't a huge must. I mean I don't something that get 9mpg, but we be happy with something that get similar to the focus no big deal.

Check out 6crew.com, mazdas247.com or mazda6club.com for more information. I really haven't heard too much bad stuff on the 2003-05's. Mine is technically a 1st gen, but it's a got some refinements over the 03-05's. they changed the body style in 09

here's a good thread:

another good one for a similar situation:

you can get a newer (05+) focus for around that price, with fewer miles. Just sayin...

I'm not following this.

Sell a 1995 Ranger.
Profit >$6,000. <-- I really don't see anywhere near that amount. maybe $1,000 is all.
Open garage space. <-- Why not just move the Ranger outside?
Buy newer car. <-- Doesn't the Ranger serve as this right now?

I'm really lost here.
