CARFAX incorrect on my '05 trade-in

Hello!

So this disturbing and makes me wonder about the accuracy of CARFAX.

I recently traded in my '05 Focus at a reputable dealer. For curiosity sake I later checked on their webpage for how much they were selling it for and noticed they have that free CARFAX service which anyone can check. Upon reading through it I noticed two major details missing. I had 3 accidents on the car, one with a 2500$ payout. I also had a major transmission failure in which they had to rebuild it. Both of these details were NOT in the CARFAX. It said "No accidents were reported" and the transmission repair just said "transmission filter and fluid replaced"! I read through it 5 times to make sure. People tell me that CARFAX is only as accurate as the info they get. However, my point is that those are THE most two important details I would want to know, major failures and accidents. The best part was that the transmission was repaired at that same dealer. I really thought CARAX was better than that.

I don't really buy used cars, mainly out of trust reasons like this example but anyone else have had a similar experience?

You said it yourself. CARFAX is only as accurate as the info they get. None of the mom and pop garages are going to bother reporting anything. My son works at a parts store and hardly any of the company accounts bother to report repairs. I purchased a Carfax for my son's 99 SVT Cobra that came up clean. There was clearly evidence of accident damage and repair.

When I was looking to buy a Focus, I looked at one at a dealer that advertised a clean car fax. It had obviously been in multiple accidents, overspray on the undercarraige at both ends, car didn't drive straight, but "clean car fax"
