I own a 3/8s version of that, it's easy to clean/oil but it's not a fine tooth mechanism. If you're looking for an affordable 1/2 in., I have one of these and am super pleased with it. http://http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/sockets-ratchets/1-2-half-inch-extendable-ratchet-98831.html I've used it quite a bit and stressed it pretty well, broke a 1/2 to 3/8s adapter with it and the ratchets none the worse for wear. Really hard deal to beat and it actually feels like a quality tool (at least for now).

I have several ratchets of that style in different lengths and sizes, including that exact one. It's ok, but definitely not as good as a fine-tooth ratchet off a tool truck. The coarse teeth make it fairly easy to damage the ratcheting mechanism if you pull hard when it's "between" teeth and not completely seated. It will do the job, but I know from experience that it will not hold up to much abuse. Sears has always repaired or replaced them for me. I just make sure I'm not wearing my uniform when I take it in. They won't warranty it if they know it's being used professionally. I bought a couple of Matco fine-tooth ratchets for jobs that a Craftsman can't handle.
