Kia cloned the focus rear end...

I was look around motortrend and saw some pics of the 2014 Kia Forte.
The article mentioned it was almost a long lost twin of a ford focus.
I was a bit confused because at first as they don't look anything alike.
That is until I saw the rear end. You just have to see this to believe it.

Like the article says, remove the spoiler and third brake light and they are the same.

Villa Ford - that's where we bought the daughter's ZX3. Bought a Taurus there many years back. And there's an In-N-Out across the street.......

So many of the style trends are derivative of other cars it seems.
The tail lamps on the focus and Kia are close.
The alloy wheels on Kia's are also very similar to the styling of Ford's and others.
I don't know who is copying who, but so many of the design elements on new cars are so similar to each other, there is little distinctive styling.

You know it's interesting...I've been noticing similar styling cues among brands for the past few years. The spread of a "face up, ass down" design in sedan for example.

I read an article in either Motor Trend or Car and Driver regarding how pedestrian safety standards are driving car design nowadays. This accounts for similar design cues throughout...

I gotta admit, Kia made it better. The taillights look more aggressive, the lower valance looks finished since Kia included the exhaust into the design, the bumper itself looks cleaner without those 3 plastic caps, or whatever they are.

I'm not saying that I like Kia, but they did a better job with the overall design. If I was to buy a 2012, I would get a hatch and try to make the bumper match the Kia's

This isn't the first time Kia has done something like this. The years ago the Amanti had Mercedes and Jag elements, and a Town Car roof.

Looks like Kia is trying to make it look like a "baby Optima". Other manufacturers have done this to their lineup as well. Remember when the Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz took some styling cues from the Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable.

^ Either way, Kia did it better than Ford. Who knows who/what/where that design came from. Coulda have been Ford coulda been Kia, who knows.

Anyway, all new cars are really looking the same...
