Anyone else have a mental block about Subaru being Australian???

For example, today I was walking out of Walmart and I saw a Forester on cheap tuner wheels and I said to myself, "Why the F would you have tuner wheels on an Austral... oh wait it's Japanese." And every time I see one I think "Super-rooo!"

The reason I think this is because in the 90's Subaru had an ad campaign with a Crocodile Dundee guy (maybe it was him), and he drove around the outback in his Outback climbing rocks and jumping canyons; plus their vehicles are AWD. So as a kid you'd think Subaru is an Aussie manufacturer until you grow up and you realize that they're Japanese. Anyone else think this?

Def not alone on this one Lol..

Funny thing is some people don't remember the commercials anymore so they don't have a clue why they think Aussie. Great yet terrible marketing.

That's great, I love when you think of a random question and as soon as you start typing google already has it, it makes you feel like less of a dumb ass

I was fooled in to this train of thought as a kid in the 90's. Crocodile Dundee, The Outback, and later similar Forrester commercials. Plus the star cluster on the Subaru logo, which apparently is not the same as the one on Australia's flag but I never looked that close when I was a kid.

I wonder why they pushed the "Australian" marketing so hard back then without ever so much as hinting that it's a Japanese car.

You thought it was Australian because at that time Subaru was marketing the Outback and Outback Sport models, which were based on the Legacy and Impreza vehicles. Of course having Paul Hogan(Crocodile Dundee),a native from Australia as a frontman helped "move the metal" as well. The Subaru is highly revered in Australia nowadays also because of the WRX/WRX STi models(in addition to the car clubs there some law enforcement agencies also use the vehicle as police interceptors).

I was probably around 14 or 15 when I found out. I don't remember if it was something I read or saw on tv, but I do remember quietly making a mental note of it and not telling anyone. As opposed to going around saying "Hey, did you know Subaru is actually Japanese?..."
