New Member With Gas Mileage Question

Hey. I am sure this has been asked and answered, (and answered, and answered.....), but this must be a popular site as there are tons and tons of threads to look through.

Just bought a 2012 Focus SE. Pretty happy with it but I have a few problems that I know will bug me moving forward. Not the least of which is the gas mileage.

12.4 gallon fuel tank. Driving in the city, I am lucky to get 240 -250 miles. Far cry from the 25-28 MPG city miles advertised. Any advice? I noticed on the Average MPG screen there is a null sign, (zero with a line through it), to the left of the fuel tank. Any ideas what that is for? (Don't se eit in the manual).

Anyways. Thank you for the advice that hopefully comes. Been great reading this forum so far......

B

Have you reset the mpg tracker? I don't know if that will make a difference but it's worth a try. The way to do it is to go to the buttons on the steering wheel, the set on the left side is the one that controls the driver's screen. Push and hold down the OK button in the middle of those buttons until the mpg counter resets and see if that changes while driving in the city.
I do it when I drive the freeway and it will show 39 mpg's while on the freeway. I haven't tried for city driving yet since my commute is 95% freeway.

ETA: I just reread your post and realized you said you are lucky to get 240-250 per tank. I was in the tracking mpg mode reading this! How do you drive? Is it careful and within speed limit or do you tend to race through and brake harder. That can make a big difference in the mpg's. If you are on the careful side than I have no idea.

You tank will only fill to about 11 gallons.

EPA estimates are just that - estimates. You specific driving style, and the traffic and roads you encounter will greatly effect mileage. Can't expect to get rated mileage ratings when you're constantly in stop and go traffic, or idling a lot.

Thanks for the reply.

Yea, I have reset it a few times. But that shouldn't effect the over all fuel consumption per fill up. I haven't been on the highway much with it yet. I'm actually looking for an excuse to drive somewhere so I can see how the mileage does on the highway.

Your MPGs will improve after it is broken in. I would say don't worry about until you have at 1000 miles on it. I am of the break it in hard but not too high on the RPMs school.

I have a new Focus that just hit 1000 miles. I have filled up 3 times and each time the Mpg has gotten better and better. When I filled up this last time I was able to go 340 miles and averaged 30.5 mpg. My first fillup averaged 26.5 mpg.
