Ford Fiesta ST gets U.S. go ahead

Ford certainly teased us last year by bringing a five-door Fiesta ST concept to the Los Angeles Auto Show. Shortly thereafter, the production Euro-spec three-door ST was revealed in Geneva, but Ford's lips were still sealed about whether or not the pint-sized hot hatch would make its way to the United States.

Speaking to AutoGuide recently at an event in California, Ford Marketing Manager Steve Ling stated that "the Fiesta is the next to get the ST treatment." That said, when Motor Trend reached out to Ford for comment, a representative from the automaker simply stated that a decision had not yet been made for other markets, including North America.

In Europe, the Fiesta ST is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, good for 177 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Assuming the car is green-lit for U.S. consumption, we don't expect those numbers to change. All we can say for now is, cross your fingers.Ford Fiesta ST gets U.S. go ahead? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 10:13:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Posted via FF Mobile In contrast, GM has just released their Sonic RS, which seems cool and has cool features (flat bottom steering wheel) but IMO, they seem like they put the thing together and then forgot about the competition. I don't see how this thing will sell. The RS starts at 20,995 and its 22,280 for the automatic. Its has tons of sporty equipment including an upgraded suspension and four wheel discs, but the engine still only puts out 138hp and 148 ft/lbs of tq. I doubt I'd pick this over a Veloster turbo, let alone a Fiesta ST. There are definitely other better cars to be had around this price point. Fiesta ST will most likely start around the same price with much more power.

Love most of it, but can't get past that gaping maw "ST" grille. Looks even more like a catfish than the Focus ST.

"When we called Ford, they told us the Fiesta ST had indeed been approved for the European market, but the decision had yet to be made for any other market – including North America."
