Long Distance Driving

Hello FF members!

I plan on driving from Ontario to Sasketchewan two days prior to this coming long weekend, and will be passing through michigan, wisconsin, minnesota and north dakota. The distance estimate on Google Maps is 2900 kms, I expect to be able to do it in 3 days of driving, approx 12-16 hrs driving a day. I am going out on my own for work related purposes, and have never done anything like this before. I've never driven through the USA, nor Western Canada. What can you tell me about this drive? Any tips, hints, things to look out for? Thank you for your time!!

Use cruise. Stay out of the t/a's bathrooms. Or any large truck stops. N if u do need to use the shower pack ur own soap. (The stuff in the despensers arnt always soap) . Canada= watch out for moose. Enjoy urself. Take mp3 player smartphone. Radio pick up isnt great at spots. Good luck

well I haven't done all of that, but i have driven through ontario, michigan, mn, and n dakota. not a bad drive to do, just watch out for cops obviously. expect two wait a while at the border getting in the US (took me about 1.5hrs last time i did it). You should be able to do 120k/hr or so most of the way down here. Last time I was in N dakota there was some construction on I94, but nothing to worry about.

Obviously make sure you get plenty of sleep before and during the trip. nothing more dangerous than a tired driver on a long drive like that.

Don't expect to drive more than 12 hrs in a day, it's more fatiguing than it appears to drive all day.

I recently did a 6500 mile (10,000 km) roadtrip in my Focus, it was not so bad.

welcome to my stomping grounds!

just so you know, western minnesota thru north dakota can be boooring. but use your cruise control (no more than 10kph over) cuz the cops will be watching.

Enjoy lake country!

I was once pulled over in southwestern MN because the Buick LeSabre I was driving had window tint that appeared too dark to the cop that had no real crime to attend to.
(It was my 87 yr old grandfather's car, he has a Rx)

I wouldn't drive 11 mph over the posted limit in MN.

I like long distance driving and frequently go well over 1000km per day. I find the first 2-3 hours are the hardest and usually plan on 1-2 stops per tank.

For many years I drove from NY to FL for the Daytona Bike Week and would drive there in 1.4 days with one stop for the night. Driving can be and should be fun.

The problem with going thru Canada is gas is 3x more expensive, as well as food, lodging, etc.
