What's this Suzuki motorcycle worth?

I don't know anything about motorcycles. It's supposedly a 1992 and a 750. The paint has definitely seen better days. The passenger mirror is broken as well as the front windshield and right turn marker. The turn marker works, the casing is just cracked. It runs and sounds very good with not ticking or anything. It started right up first try. It looks to be in fairly good condition minus a bunch of cosmetic stuff. I'd strip down all the paint and redo it if I were to buy it.

What's it worth? He's asking $1,800. It seems a bit high for condition. Is this even a good bike to start out on?

What a ripoff.

You could buy a brand new Chinese scooter for that much.

Run away. Fast. The last thing you want is an unreliable bike. I sold my 09 kawi ninja 250 for 3 grand, and that's 17 years newer. There are plenty of semi classic bikes in that price range that you would probably be better off with.

What's a good bike to look for used to start off with? I want something to learn on basically that I can pick up for definitely under $2,000.

I'd go to a bike forum and get some opinions there.

I'd personally look for an older Kawasaki Ninja 500. They aren't the best looking bikes out there, but they run forever and aren't crazy powerful. Here's an example: http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/mcy/3190003090.html (I actually like this one, looks sweet)

The Yamaha Virago's have been around forever too, they're solid and inexpensive as well if you're looking for a less aggressive riding position: http://lancaster.craigslist.org/mcy/3121845795.html (this one is 1000cc's... probably too big for learning on)

Another Yamaha... this one is a SWEET deal. If you lived closer, I'd say get this one lol

The main advantage of those 2 bikes in particular are that parts are everywhere, especially the mid 90's kawi's. Just treat buying a bike like buying a car too, make sure the title is good, all the keys are accounted for... etc.

find yourself something less than a 500 and easy to handle. Honda shadow for example

I'll second this post.

I have a '99 Kawasaki Ninja 500 myself and it rocks. 60hp is plenty when you're only pushing a 400 pound machine around. I believe I read its supposed to be good for 13 sec 1/4 mile time.

If you like a sporty bike others to consider

Suzuki GS500, little less power than the ninja but air cooled (less to go wrong) and better fuel economy. Which if used as a commuter could be a big plus

Suzuki SV650. Bit faster bike but not unreasonable.

Consider one thing people either have forgotten or never realized. There are "Sport bikes" and "super sport (or just superbike, or crotch rocket)" The super variety are usually referred to as sport bikes these days. What most don't realize is that a super sport is pretty much a race-spec bike made legal for the road, and a sport bike is more simply a sporty bike. Its like comparing an exotic super car to say a Mazda Miata.

Super sports are not for beginners. They make ridiculous amounts of power (115hp and some pushing toward 200hp). In reality only professional riders can use them anywhere close to their potential. You don't want to be some squid blasting down the road then going through a turn at a crawl.

Most powerful bike I ever rode made 80hp and I can't imagine that not being enough. Thinking that's too slow would seriously be like taking out the new 5.0 mustang on the highway and thinking "I dunno... I just don't think this thing is quick enough or fast enough for me... out on open public roads." Sounds ridiculous when put that way but thousands of people seem to use that sort of logic when it comes to bikes for some reason.

I've been riding since 2007.

Anyway, ride smart and enjoy. See a bike you're interested in? Best to ask on a bike forum dedicated to that specific model to see what the community says.
