What should I buy?

I'm going to be enlisting in the Navy in February of next year, so I'll be buying a new car ASAP. I've gotten it down to a ZX3 or SVT Focus, but I'm not entirely sure which one I want to buy.

As far as I know, the SVT has a larger engine, (2.3 liter opposed to 2.0 liter?) a six speed transmission and four wheel disc brakes. What other features does it have that the ZX3 lacks? Does it come with a preformance clutch, or is it the same clutch as the ZX3? Does the gearshift have the stupid reverse interlock device that you have to pull up on to put it in reverse? Is the European Appearance package worth it, and can you get that with any color, or just the yellow and orange? I've heard the SVT can go to 140 MPH, is that out of the factory or do you need one of the mod chips to defeat the governor? Any other reasons to buy the SVT over the ZX3?

actually I think the SVT still has the modified V-VT 2L Zetec and the ZX3 has the 2.3L PZEV. The SVT has more hp 170bhp, and almost 150ftlbs of torque, the PZEV is like 152 and 150 or near those numbers (I'm sure someone will come in here and give the exact ones). The SVT has 17" alloy wheels, the ZX3 probably has 15" or 16". The SVT has a lower suspension with a more sporty ride though it doesn't give up much in the comfort. The 6-speed is a getrag 6-speed, and is a very nice tranny, I don't know about the reverse lock-out. I'm fairly certain that ford used a different clutch for the SVT. The euro app package looks really nice, but I don't know about the availibility or the color options. Otherwise all you are really getting I think is maybe different bumpers and different wheels. The SVT interior is much nicer in my opinion than the ZX3 and is a great car as is. The ZX3 is a great car, but a little tinkering here and there, would make it look better.

ok...
the svt comes with a zetec 2.0 good for 170 bhp...
the 04 focus comes with a 2.3 duratec engine good for 140bhp...
i would buy a 2.3...
parts are coming fast for this engine...
the 2.3 is the same engines used on the mazda 6 that is good for 160bhp

Don't really know the specs other than what I read and what I hear from you guys on here, but I would say depends on what you wanting out of it. If you want the sport look and all the extra options, not to mention the engine w/ the most horse power, I would say get an svt. If you wanted something not quite as upscale as the svt, but has the same base features, then I would say go for the zx3. Like everyone was saying, think you can get just as much horsepower out of the new 2.3 PZEV zx3 as you could the svt after doing certain mods when they come out for them. Goodluck and happy shopping. Keep us informed on what you deceide to get.

I vote for the 2.3l. But as RPIJG and I came to the conclusion on in a very heated debate, the future of the 2.3l is still unknown. It had great potential, but we don't know how much will be realized in the future, or for how long.

Other smaller things about the 2: The SVT comes with nice leather seats, and a nicely cleaned up interior, painted side moldings, different bumpers and sideskirts, and the SVT name.

However, the ZX3 can be lighter than the SVT, depending on how you option it. And its insurance should be cheaper, and uses only 87 octane gas as opposed to 91.

For me, that didn't really mean anything to me. I already had suspension parts from my last Focus, and I love this engine, and I don't care about little frills. I do miss not having its brakes though; they are real nice!

On the first point, it's true, we can only hope that it gathers stong support.

On the Second, I didn't realize the SVT required higher octane, good to know.

Again, it really depends on your personal preferences. The SVT is a great all around performer right out of the factory, looks, handling, power, accesories. The ZX3 is a great car, fun to drive, but not as sporty out of the gate, you'd have to sink some time and money into it to get to where the SVT is, and you still wouldn't have the Variable Valve Timing and you wouldn't have the 6-speed manual.

I'll probably get the SVT, I just wanted to make sure that the differences between the two were worth the extra price or if it was a case of "yeah it looks good but it really isn't that different under the hood." I think the four wheel disc brakes, 6 speed trans and higher horsepower engine seal it for me.

Also, I thought higher-octane fuel wasn't required until you got into forced-induction intake systems. Does the SVT engine really require 91 octane, or is it another case of its nice but you don't really need it?

I plan on installing a turbocharger on my car regardless of what model I do end up buying. I think I saw somewhere on these forums that the SVT engine can take more advantage of forced induction intake. Is that true?

You need 91 octane because of the higher compression and agressive timing.

FC is bringing out more and more parts for the PZEV as well as developing them. Look at their website and what they have done to "PEPPER". That's its name.
