Question freestyle chassis/AWD with SVT

Anybody really wonder about the SVT's body on a FreeStyle AWD chassis and duratec 3.0 V6? What do you guys think? I know you'd be looking at alot of money to do it, but it would be interesting to contemplate. :)

Never wondered. It ******g bugs me that they slapped that underpowered motor (for a car of its size) in that car and in the 500. I suppose they might be leaving room for an SVT version (particularly the 500).

Did you see recently in some major magazine the pic of the new (2005, I think) Europe-only Focus RS? It makes 280hp. Once again: EUROPE-FREAKIN'-ONLY!

Forgot to mention - it has a Haldex AWD setup - a product of Ford's ownership of Volvo.

Its alot easier to get a car certified for emissions over in Europe than here in the States. I reckon that is why we get the low end of things. AWD would have been and interesting feature on the SVT. To be honest though, for the power we have now, i'd rather have the 3.0L duratec with 203 HP...then I wouldn't worry about whether I want to F/I or not. Eh, I'm more interested in conjecture on the possibility of swapping in the chassis of the freestyle or not. :)

I heard through someone that the Volvo S40 (new one) is based on the 4 Dr. Focus/ Mazda 3 platform.

Any truth to that?

Yes, totally true according to my reading. Mazda3, New Euro Focus, Volvo S40. Likewise, the Freestyle and 500 are related to the Volvo S60 - don't know how directly, though.

They share platforms, but that doesn't mean a lot of parts. Unfortunately we don't get the Focus that shares the Mazda3/S40 platform for a few more years.

And even though the Freestyle and 500 got the undersized engine, it actually performs really well with the CVT and the 6 speed trans. The drivetrain was done pretty well to make up for the small engine.

Hey, jevoe015, I just saw your post about the new SVT Focus - I think that's the one I read about in a brief article the other day. It was in either Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Road & Track, or Automobile - I don't have them in front of me, but I bought all four about a week ago...

You shouldn't be trying to mate up an SVT motor with the CVT. One of the reasons that Ford went with the Duratec 3.0 is that the CVT is torque-limitting. All CVTs are this way, that is why they show up on smaller cars. I am sure they are working on beefer CVTs to take more powerful engines, but if you do an engine swap with a Contour SVT engine you will end up destroying the Freestyle CVT with way too much torque.

It's a shame that other thread was locked. I actually work at Ford, and I can tell you there is nothing in the works right now like that ST from Europe. Sorry guys.
