New Focus owner, have some ?'s

Hey guys,

Just purchased a 2012 Focus SE and I have a few questions. This is my first time buying a new car so I'm relatively new to this scene as well.

First question:
I've noticed that my trans seems to be slipping in first gear when coming from a full stop, and occasionally in second gear (automatic trans). Is this because of the different type of engine the focus has that I read about? Is it possible the trans just needs to be broken in still (all other gears shift fine and smooth)? Should I bring it in the dealer to check it out or just wait a bit?

Second question:
When pulling out of my parking space this morning the car began to violently shake after going about 2 feet in reverse. I stopped, put it in drive and moved forward. Repeated the reverse and it again because to violently jerk backwards. I drove to work (about 30 miles) and again put it in reverse in the parking lot and the problem did not reoccur. I tested it again when leaving work and it did not reoccur. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Third question:
My engine temp is running hotter than any other car I've owned (I think). The needle hits the line that starts the Hot segment of the meter. I noticed this about 20 minutes into my commute with an outside temp of 73 degrees. Is this normal?

Final question:
Has anyone with a 2012 model noticed that it looks like their front passenger door has a dent on it? I can't tell if it's the way the door was designed or if the dealer possibly tried to fix up a dent on the door.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure I'm just freaking out and being over cautious as this is the first "new" car I've ever owned.

Your first two questions have to do with the transmission, not the engine (there's nothing particularly unique about the engine). It doesn't sound abnormal, just drive aggressively (moderately hard accelerations) and in a wide variety of styles / speeds for the first 1,000 miles and it should eventually smooth out. Forget about maximizing mileage for this break in period. Keeping in mind this transmission will never be as smooth or otherwise act the same as a conventional automatic, which it's not.

My temp needle is always right in the middle in the Florida summer heat. So you should probably have that looked at.

If the contours of your sheet metal aren't exactly the same on both sides of the car then yes it may be a flaw they tried to fix. The only differences between the two sides are the gas cap cover and the temperature sensor nub under the side mirror, both on the passenger side.

Thank you for the response. I saw something about a firmware upgrade for the trans, could I need this?

It's possible, depends on the car's build date. And there are rumours of "updates to the firmware update" so you never know. Take it to the dealer and tell them you want the latest and greatest firmware.

Ok will do. Is that typically a quick process? I'll run by on my lunch if so.

Don't know for sure. But even if it's only 5 minutes, the dealer still has to work you in around other jobs, unless they're dead. They wouldn't put you through the "quick lane" oil change lane for this job. Good luck.
