Question Buying first car- Automatic?

Hi everyone.

I was really considering buying a ford focus titanium for my first car, but I saw that it's Dual Clutch Transmission messes up a lot at low speeds. When I test-drove the car, I didn't notice tooooo much jumpiness, and all of that was overshadowed by how excited I got for the car.

Is the automatic DCT transmission THAT horrible, or am I only hearing about it from the 5 percent?

Thanks for letting me know!

If you do a lot of traffic driving, it's not the best. The less stop and go you have the better it works. From what I've noticed at least.

I've driven plenty without issue but I still can't get used to them, coming from the older-style automatics. Honestly, I'd just get a standard if you know how to drive one, and save any potential headaches (not saying there will be, but then you're sure to avoid them).

Ah thanks guys. I'm so bummed out about all of this. Seriously, since the beginning I had my eyes set on the Focus, all to find out the night before I'd seriously get prices that the auto sucked.

I mean the Honda civics are just so boring for me, and they were really the runner up in my decision.

I don't know how to drive a stick. I could learn, of course, but I'm lazy and would probably get sick of it! I want to keep this for a long time..

If I were to buy again I would get the se sport package and force my lady to drive a stick. I have the dct and I'll say it does a pretty good job.

If it really is your first car then go manual!

manual isn't bad at all. I've been driving one for four years. Heavy traffic jams are sucky sometimes but other than that I have no regrets.

I've owned four foci and all manuals. They just feel better and get better mileage IMO.

I am an over 60 woman and drive a manual transmission.
Auto trannies are just too boring to drive. IMO.
My advice is buy the one YOU want. IF YOU really want to be rowing a transmission five times for every stoplight. That is not maybe, but MUST.. then yeah, join the club. It is fun. If that does not really appeal to you, then get the automatic.
I am assuming you actually WANT the automatic:
The main thing would be a reasonable test drive. Before you even start on the drive, check the seating position, the steering wheel, take your time to get them good FOR YOU. Then a 20 30 miles in city streets in the car YOU are going to buy before you sign anything. Leave the radio or stereo OFF, tell the salesman (if he comes along,) to shut up.
Then you can get a feel for how THAT particular dual clutch tranny is working for you.
In general folks either hate it right off, or find it to be fine.
(and naturally someone who can say otherwise WILL pop in just to try and complicate this, ignore them)
Anyway, drive it. How does it feel. If you fall in love with your car (as i did) none of any trivial stuff will matter.
(seriously, some of the complaints are like "the Princess and the Pea" story..LOL)
