It is sort of sad that the Land Cruiser (Jap) and Land Rover Defender (Brit) were the most capable SUV's and yet they never caught on in America as they should have.

A year ago I got to mess with a new Land Rover Defender. I so wish we could get them in the states.

Still very capable but try starting at $78k and then there's the Lexus which can take you over $90k nicely equipped.
Now a 2013 4Runner Limited can be had near that $45k mark.

The original Land Rovers, and to a lesser extent, early Land Cruisers, were NOT SUVs. They were built to travel where there were no roads, and no bridges, and running them on a "highway" at more than 45mph for any length of time was a recipe for sure death! The best combination, imo, was the 4 cylinder in the long (109) wheel base, with the tropical roof, and river crossing intake and exhaust.

I'm still loving my '99 4Runner with 174k on the odo and still goes and goes and I like to get it dirty and it's a great camping vehicle. It has the factory rear diff lock which really helps off road and the LCs could be equipped with both front and rear lockers back in the '90s which was fantastic but they were gas hogs.

I do like it nice and tidy for a night on the town if the Focus stays home.
