Turbo diesel fuel efficiency

Can anyone help??

I've just bought a 3 year old 1.8 litre turbo diesel Ford Focus estate and, according to the published figures, I should be getting a combined (i.e. urban and extra urban) fuel efficiency of 52.3 mpg (Imperial, rather than US, gallons). However, despite doing mainly rural and motorway driving I'm only getting a measly 42 mpg or thereabouts, and am wondering why. One of the main reasons for buying this car was its supposed fuel efficiency. I have done the obvious things like check the tyre pressure and get the car serviced and this has failed to make any difference whatsoever. It could be the way I am driving the car, of course, but I used to get excellent fuel efficiency from my previous car, and I'm not driving this one any differently, so I doubt that this would be the case. When I asked my local Ford dealer for advice, they suggested that I have a fuel efficiency test done, which, they tell me, would show up any electrical fault but not mechanical faults. I only want to pursue this option if I think that it will lead me to the solution, as it's quite expensive to have the test done.

Does anyone out there drive one of these cars? What fuel efficiency do you achieve? Do you have any ideas on where the problem may lie??
