03 focus, I need to make a spare key, do I have to go get it programmed....

I purchased a 2003 Ford Focus with one key, one fob.
How can I make another key without spending a boat load on computer chip prgramming? Or am I stuck going to the dealer only? Thanks
Ant

You need two working keys to program a third.

Sure. But it will have to be programmed to start the car.

You have another alternative, but it's not a great one. You could make two copies and hide the original behind the dash and near the ignition. This effectivly disables the electronic lock and would make it easier for anyone to steal the car, but you would then have two usable keys for much less than getting one programmed.

If you do get one programed, then I would have a third key cut and program it yourself later.

It's not that easy. Well, that method anyway. There is a ring around the ignition cylinder that excepts the signal from the chip. The chip has to be really close to the ring. So, the chip would have to be mounted there. Here's one that I have. It suppose to be in a glass tube, but it broke.

Most of the better locksmiths have the ability to cut and program a single key for half the price of the dealer. It cost me $60 to have one cut for my explorer that uses the exact same key as my focus

you can go to home depot or another hardware store some have machines that will copy the key along with all the security things so you can start your car.
