Perspective buyer, Q's about what to look for on used models

Hi all, the name is Jeff and im from Sk, Canada.

I currently drive a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Its bought and paid for. I have never "connected" with the car. Im a larger guy at 6'2 230 pounds and it offers great space, but I just seem to have gotten bored of it after driving for over a year in it.

I started at looking at small SUV's to replace it, but found them quite bland, and Id love 4x4 , but Id need it .1% of the year on those RARE days!

Anyhow, since I saw the new focus , I was intruiged. I love the cockpit, and the general nature of that call. I live in the city, and I like small vehicles for parking and all that.

Anyhow, my friend is a sales manager at a local lot, and is able to hook me up quite well with a large variety of cars. They have 4 or 5 titaniums (hatches and coupes) that I am interested in....

Here is one that caught my eye. I love the look of the Hatch, but its not a deal breaker and for the right deal I would not deny a sedan...

Here is one fully loaded unit that I took for a drive and really enjoyed. VERY low KM and the price he is offering to me is quite a biut lower then the advertised price.

Now, I took it for a drive, and it feels great. Love the interior, and well not being a speed demon, it was fun to drive.

Im reading about transmission issues... Is ford re-doing their tranny, or recalling anything, or?!? What other things can I look for?! I can take the car for a day or two, but I want to know what to look for to ensure it isnt a lemon....

Thanks for any tips/advice!

What's your perspective on trading in a 2011 model year vehicle?

How much is your prospective dealer going to make on your 2011 model year trade?

I paid 19k for my Sonata. Dealer will give me 16.5k on my car . 2500 dollars to drive for 8 months. I never bought the Sonata brand new, and it was paid off in full...

So yah, that part of things isnt too bad.... Not great, but it's a Hyundai that needs new tires soon (800$) :s

BUT....., to answer your question..... The transmission issues were primarily computer programing issues and have been dealt with. I wouldn't worry about it, but would have the service department install the most recent TSB. Other things to look for are rattles of the headliner and stains from the glue ford used. That also has been solved but your build date, 06/23/11 may not have the fix so look for that. Just go over the car well and note any possible problems to be addressed before sale. I'd also try for the extended warranty to be thrown in the deal. There are a LOT of electronics in this car and most won't be covered for long with standard warranty.

Thanks for the good reply.

Im assuming that update on the transmission is something that the dealer would not charge for..... Covered under warranty?

Yes it is covered under warranty. Also soon to be sent out is an update on the MFT system. That is slated for this quarter, don't have a date for it yet though.

Excellent. Thanks for your help. I went from looking at a gas efficient SUV to a small compact.

I really think Im going to buy a focus now, then pick up a Ecoboost Escape after a year of them being out. Its what I want in a small SUV!
