Are You In The 5%?

I stopped by my local Chevy dealer today to look at the new Sonic 1.4 turbo and they didn't have any on the lot. Just five 1.8's and out of the five one was a stick. I asked the dealer my they only had one standard in stock and he said "Only five percent of new car buyers want a standard, so we don't really stock them." I was caught of guard by that. In a small car like a Sonic or a Fiesta I would think you would prefer a standard. So are you or are you not in the 5%?

i'm in the 5% ill probably never own another auto, unless i have no other choice.

my brother used to always ask me why i bothered converting my car to a manual. he then started driving my dads focus and now he says he will never buy an auto and doesn't get why people wont learn to drive a manual.

i think i final convinced my friend to put a T56 in his camaro.

my girl friend knows ill never buy an auto and if she wants one she will be paying for it.

being an Automotive engineering student 6 out of the 12 of us drive manuals, 3 out of 12 have autos and the other 3 don't drive because they can't afford it. we constantly poke fun at the auto guys.

seems to me alot of people end up with autos because its what is there. seen a few people on here get a new auto because they couldn't get the manual they wanted. its a shame.

It is true that in the United States, only 5% or so of all buyers want a manual transmission.
Since the majority of the buyers are buying sports cars... (IMO anyway) the number of manual tranny econobox cars is dizzyingly small.

However, the 2012 Ford Focus owners who post here have a MUCH larger percentage of manual owners.

So dealers, who usually only want to have on hand what they are certain to sell, rarely carry manual tranny cars in stock. Except sports cars...

In Europe it is a totally opposite story, and most owners have manual trannies.. Only the top expensive luxury cars there have auto's standard.

One of the 5% here too. I just can't stand autos. I owned two Chrysler products and both were garbage. Every shift was harsh and neither knew what downshifting was. I'd much rather row my own gears.

Just about about all the rental cars in Europe are manual transmissions too.

Europe also has a bigger percentage of hatchbacks and wagons as opposed to sedans.

Is that 5% of people want or 5% of people buy?

I've always WANTED a manual transmission car but I had to settle for an automatic in my Mustang because that's all there was. I couldn't spend time searching all over America for a car with the same options, same color, same mileage, same price because of the manual transmission.

My Focus is a manual and I STILL had to settle because I didn't want this color!

I think the number of people who WANT manual transmission cars in America is MUCH higher than 5% but people are looking at the sales data and not the actual opinion of people looking to buy vehicles.

^^^ i think some where around 5-10% want a manual but settle. then might have another 10% that kinda want to give manuals a try but can't find any to try and get an auto.

Then again, with over 250 million cars registered in the united states, 5% is a LOT of cars.

I'm the 5%, but if it truly was for econo-commuting, and it had an efficient auto, like the power shift,I would totally consider it.
