Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ

I was surprised by the number of Toyota haters in the auto-hate discussion. To me, reliable=good, and most people agree that Toyotas are reliable. Anyway, it made me wonder what you folks think of these new Toyobaru sports cars that I've been reading about. They look pretty awesome to me. I'm not sure if I would go for something impractical like that, but if they get good mileage and run on regular gas I might consider one. So what do you think? Are they underpowered? Ugly? Does the Scion name ruin it?

Underpowered? Maybe but not really. 50 more horsies than my present car and a truly dialed-in chassis... that Subie would be my hoss. No no Toyo. Prolly because the rest of their lineup is so... yawn... Toyota. Except for maybe the old school 4-Runner/ Hilux pickups. I'd rock one of those for winter fun any day.

I'm excited about the FR-S. Reminds me a lot of the old 240z-300z cars. Right now I think the country is lacking a truly affordable sports car with a FR setup and independent rear suspension.

Make no mistake haters, this is going to be a great car. It'll have a limited market, being set up like a true sports car, but I'm pretty excited about it. Looks like it would be a blast to drive.

The only thing I think is a little strange was the decision to drop this under the Scion brand. Scion is so youth oriented, and I don't think many parents would go for this. And then you have slightly older people that might normally want this car, but don't want to be seen driving something that is so youth oriented.

Honda had the S2000 under their main brand and that worked out fine for them. I see older people driving them all the time. Probably see more middle aged people driving s2000's than youngsters.

Camaro RS and Genesis Coupe not good enough for you?

Besides, who needs an independent rear suspension. The Mustang V6 is far better than its competitors even with a live axle.

After a bit of reading, I see that it will require premium gas. I guess I can't have it all. I'll probably go ahead and get a Camry LE. That's close enough.

I think they chose to call it a Scion in order to improve the image of the Scion brand. Right now a lot of people think of Scions as poser cars. This new car is apparently a real performance machine. If they make a turbocharged version, even the mustang/camaro crowd will have to respect it. I doubt this will be a high volume or high profit car, so it might benefit the company indirectly in terms of marketing more than it does in straightforward profit.

All great choices, but I don't see any of them as purpose-driven as the new FT86's. The Genesis is a great car, but it is set up more like a practical 2-door coupe. If you want a real sports car vibe, you need truly useless back seats, or no back seats at all.

Any of the muscle cars, also impressive cars, but again, mentally for me, I put them in a different category. They're grand tourers. Not really sports cars.

I know that's a lot of semantics, but that's why I put this car in a category all its own.
