What to watch out for when shopping for a focus??

I'm looking to purchase a used focus, any year from 2000 and up. Will be using this car as my daily driver with 2 small children in carseats. I was wondering of any common problems with certain years, motors, trans? Also opinions of 2 dr vs. 4 dr for the carseat issue. What would you suggest?? Thanks for the input!!

I'd say 2000 you should be weary of. First model year doesn't always work out very well. Otherwise, I've heard amazing things. Carcomplaints.com shows common complaints if you're curious.

The only thing about that site is I didn't notice that they say how many cars where actually produced for any model. You can have thousand of complaints but if several million cars where sold its not at all bad as it seems, vs. limited produced cars with few to no problems because there where so little of them made.
Plus some comments on their are total bs. Someone was complaining how their tranny finally went at 450k km... And someone else was annoyed that their leather seats started to crack at 300k km.

Otherwise its a good site for finding if a car has common problems.

Imo I wouldn't get a car that old due to rust and high km's. Here that things frame would be swiss cheese with all the damn salt. If you need space get a wagon if not get a sedan, but wagons should have better resale values due to the fact you can get more use out of them.
Also take a look at this for reliability: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Re...us&trimid=1802

According to ConsumerReports...the 03 Focus has an average repair history.

As much as the reliability ratings...the type of drivers the car has had...and maintenance is just as important.

I'd avoid the SOHC engine...prone to valve problems?

I usually try to buy one around 100K miles...usually they still have 50K on them?

Make sure most things work and it runs well...look underneath for rust and oil leaks?

Be sure to check the engine. If the spark plugs go through the valve cover then you're ok. You do not want the SOHC SPI engine because it's weak and it has problems.

Moved to Ford Focus and General Car Chat. Ford Focus Technical Chat is for technical discussions relating to general maintenance, electrical issues, engine trouble, and recalls. Thanks for posting!

Yeah, some of the problems are over exaggerated, too. But it helps to see what to look out for at least.

Don't buy 2000 or 2001, go with 02+

Don't buy a focus with an spi engine, look for a zetech. It will say right on top of the engine when you pop the hood.

Test drive and listen for sounds coming from the front passenger side wheel area, stuff seems to go wrong there most before anything else.

If it is over 100000 has the timing belt been replaced and do they have a maintaince record of it? If not, plan on having that cost as that is regular maintaince at about 100000 miles.

Post a link of the listing or post pictures of it before you decide to buy and we'll give you a second opinion. Just take a few of the outside, at least one of the engine bay and one of the dash area.

Is the 2.0 DOHC or the 2.3L better? Are the manuals any more reliable then the Automatics?

*@ whynotthinkwhynot, I wasn't looking for general information on these vehicles, I was looking for techincal problems/common problems to watch out for on them!**

2000's are pretty beat up now, stick to 2002-04 Zetecs and 04+ Duratecs.
