Need to upgrade my 2000 ZTS, thinking of an ST

My 2000 ZTS has served me well (got it with 60K, now has 213K). Overall, I think I like the looks of the 2005-07 well enough so that's where I'm looking. Not sure I can handle the styling on the 2008-11's and can't justify a 2012. I could live with a bit less fuel economy for some more power. Looking at a 2005-07 ST with a 5-speed. If, overall, I was pretty happy with my 2000 ZTS (it has a 5-speed), is there any reason I wouldn't like the ST? I drive newer cars on occasion for rentals, so I know what I'm missing there. Just want to know if there's something I'm not aware of on the ST's that I should consider.

Thanks,
BB

there isn't any reason you wouldn't like the ST

for the most part its the same car as you have with a different engine and minor tweaks all around. if you got your heart set on an ST you won't be disappointed.

If you survived a 2000 model, you will be happy with anything. I have one too, and they are the most problem prone Focus out there.

You will only find them with a 5-speed. Another good thing about the ST's is they came from Ford with most options. Just find one with decent miles and in good condition and you should be happy.

On a scale of mechanical reliability and everyday "liveability", I'd give my '05 ST a 9 out of 10. I bought it used with about 50k. Some 20k later, it has needed nothing beyond brake pads and one change of spark plugs (that wasn't strictly necessary). It does have one barely audible unusual sound that I've failed to locate. Even took apart the rear wheels and inspected the bearings. But it's not loud so I just turn on the radio and forget about it. Be patient in your search and good luck!

The ride is a little on the harsh side for a car driven primarily on less-than-ideal roads, IMO. But then again, it does corner rather nicely. Supposedly, '06 and '07 have toned-down the harsh feel by changes with the front spring/strut setup. I don't know if that has lessened the sport handling any, but I would probably rather make the compromise in a daily driver.

Thanks all, I drove an 07 at a dealer and was pretty impressed. About the only things I didn't like were the cloth inserts on the seats (my 00 leather seats with 213K look almost new, better than those did) and the hard plastic on the upper door panels (mine has soft vinyl). Other than that, had great power and torque. This one also had the "tall" rear spoiler, I thought it a bit too much (I'm 50, not 28 anymore!). I'm seriously considering it, definitely liked the power, moonroof, heated seats, better dash. It even looks like they carved some more room over the cup holders. Has them in the door also but not sure how well those would work.

One other thing, not sure if the hitch off my 00 will fit under the bumper of the ST, as I recall it had a bit of a decorative drop "ground effects". I tow a small boat and would hate to have to "notch" that bumper cover out.

Yah, you're right about the hard plastic on the door panels. Not good elbow rests. Even my '97 Escort had the soft vinyl. Too bad about the "kit" but the STs are hard enough to find that you might not want to pass it by. Maybe you can impress upon the dealer how that stuff takes away from the value for you and get yourself a better deal? In any case, best of luck!

For some reason it just totally passed me by that it's only the ST's that have the 2.3 (as I understand it). Now that I figured that out, I have seen a few for sale. Not in a super hurry, I can wait for the right deal. I'm pretty sure there's going to be a hitch issue. Went to the mfgr of the one I have and it says it will fit an 07 Focus but not an "SVT". I'm pretty sure they meant ST as they didn't make an SVT in 07 anymore, did they?

The 05 Focus ST is what replaced the SVT. Quite a bit of the suspension was carried over to the ST. The ST was the top focus model 05-07 and was pretty loaded. My 05 came standard with 4 whl discs, traction control, ABS, heated elec mirrors etc. They also all came with 2.3 and a 5-spd. Not that they will really be worth anything down the road, but still a fairly rare car.
