Car & Driver 2012 Camaro ZL1 First Test

Quote:
With 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque from the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V-8, eye-popping acceleration is also a given despite the ZL1’s hefty 4120-pound curb weight. The engine is carried over from the CTS-V, with a two-stage exhaust system borrowed from the Corvette and a revised intake responsible for the extra 24 horsepower. Two bits of technology aid in the quarter-mile fight: “No-lift shift” allows you to crack off upshifts without easing off the gas, and launch control manages wheelspin and helps 0-to-60 consistency (although we were able to beat the system after a few attempts). Get everything right, and the ZL1 hits 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and passes 1320 feet in 12.3 seconds at 119 mph—or better, as the cold and dusty track at Inde was less than ideal for acceleration runs.
ZL1 Stats
Zero to 60 mph: 4.1 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 8.9 sec
Zero to 130 mph: 14.7 sec
Street start, 5–60 mph: 4.6 sec
Top gear, 30–50 mph: 7.8 sec
Top gear, 50–70 mph: 6.7 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 12.3 sec @ 119 mph
Top speed (drag ltd, mfr's claim): 180 mph
Braking, 70–0 mph: 165 ft
Roadholding, 250-ft-dia skidpad: 0.98 g

Compare those numbers to the current 550hp GT500 and their dead similar. last i checked the GT500 ripped off a low 4 second sprint to 60, low 12 second quarter mile and achieved 1.0g on the skidpad. i honestly thought to myself 4.1? thats it??? looks like the Camaro's 4,100+ lb weight hurts it again IMO. the new GT500 with its 650hp and less weight (3800+ lbs) is expected to be faster but its all about how well Ford has managed to put the power down. hopefully Ford has chosen a better tire as they have made some more suspension tweaks.

here's the GT500 test to compare: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...t500-road-test

and here is the ZL1 test: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...l1-test-review

Thats great, but the Shelby GT500 still looks way more intimidating. The newer style Camaro has not grown on me at all.

Sounds cool of course, but almost $60,000 for a Camaro? I wonder sometimes who the type of person is who buys these cars. It may be the best Camaro you can buy for the money, but in the end you still have a car that people refuse to stop associating with mullets and light beer.

And the top speed is estimated at 180mph? I can't imagine 180 in a Camaro being anything less than totally crap-your-pants scary.

Hopefully ford gets the power down in the GT500, if they do it can be a pretty mean car.

No different from the 202 mph the 2013 GT500 claimed to hit

Probably less scary than 230+kph felt in my old Mazda 323 GT...

I've been 150 in my heavily modded 94 mustang gt. It wasn't really that scary. Thinking about it afterwards is scary though. When you are going that fast, absolutely nothing goes through your mind except the road you are on. When you stop, you remember almost nothing of it (except that you did it).

What makes the ZL1 interesting is the suspension, not the engine. We'll have to see how the Super Snake fares on the "Ring". For now, this is as impressive as you can get in such a heavy vehicle.

For reference, scroll down and see the lap times. This ZL1 with that driver came in at 7:41 which is impressive. That driver is a GM test driver, not one of the usual Ring suspects.

That thing can seriously hold the road.

Perhaps I should have qualified my statement: 180mph on American roads, with potholes, uneven surfaces, and crumbling asphalt.
