New ZXE SilverStars installed

Have used the SilverStars now for two years and one finally gave out. Went to get a new pair and found the ZXE on the shelf. Supposed to have xenon to put out even whiter light than the original SilverStar. Left the working SiverStar in and replaced the dead one with a new ZXE. Big enough difference to notice. Almost as much difference as between a SilverStar and a normal stock halogen. Don't know about the life of these. On the back of the card, it shows one reference bar pertaining to bulb life, same as old SilverStar.

2003 ZX5 uses 9003 series bulb.

Thanks for the word, Jay. I'm on my third Ultra in two years. Do you think this ZXE is the old Ultra with a new name?
I also use Silver Stars in my tail and reverse lamps. I began using them when I had tinted tails, to avoid extra scrutiny from the "law". I still like the extra brightness when I'm reversing.

I don't know if the other SilverStar bulbs are touted as having xenon gas as the ZXE. All I know now is that the ZXE is brighter. I would not have believed it if I didn't compare them side by side. I got them at $10 off, so I figured it was worth another $10 to give them a try over the regular SilverStar. The normal extra $20 cost for two years of bulb life is worth it for the ZXE in my opinion.

keep in mind that all conventional filament bulbs dim with time as the filament ages.

So a 2 year old silverstar will look much dimmer compared to a new silver star, let alone the new ZXE bulb.

If you really want to see the true difference between a ZXE and silverstar you need a new bulb of each type. I can tell a large visible difference between a new sliverstar and a 1 year old silverstar if only 1 headlight goes out.

Keep us posted on how long the ZXE lasts. I spent $50 on a pair of Ultras that lasted 3 months, I was so pissed it took some serious thought about going back to silverstars and not abandoning the brand. But I had them before for a couple years and they seem to last fine.

apagios you are right about the bulb dimming over time. So my test was not that accurate, although the old remaining SilverStar is still brighter than many late model cars that I am driving along side of.

it is disturbing that some people have had such bad luck with the life of the bulb.

Posted via FF Mobile Yea, I had Hoens for a while, I wasnt expecting them to be like HIDs, but I have since taken them out. Why? Because they looked cool, but didnt illuminate the road good at all. I switched back to regular H9 bulbs and they perform better.

bigjordan,

good point. I never considered seriously any claims of high wattage light from 55w bulbs, and I avoid any tinted or colored bulbs as well, as obvious filterign out certain wavelengths of light is not going to make anything "brighter" or better illuminationg is a more correct way to say it since you can have a ultra white tiny 1/2 watt LED thats "brighter" then a headlight, but obviously not powerful enough to illuminate much.

The silverstars are legitimately better performing for me, I believe they are varying the filament material somewhat to get a "brighter" light as compared to a lesser quality filament. when I was reading up on the Silverstar Ultra bulb fiasco (after mine died in 3 months) I think one of the reasons they were supposed to be brighter was a more radical filament material.

Now I was really pissed about the Ultras, and frankly the improvement between the silverstars and the Ultras is not nearly as noticable and the difference between regular bulbs and silverstars. so silverstars last for a few years for me, and I get them "cheap" online (cheaper then any autoparts store anyway)

So I would say thats definitely a good read for people who think "blue bulbs" are brighter and worth dropping a ton of money on. I'll just say I am satisfied with the regular silverstars and don't feel that ~$20-30 a pair for 2-3 years is a bad deal.
