Potential Focus Buyer...Questions about MT

Hi everyone,

I am very serious about purchasing a 2012 Focus Sedan and I've read the Consumer Reports articles about the trans issues...but I did not see any mention of the manual transmission.

I would assume that the MT is safe from the issues addressed in consumer reports, is this correct?

Have any MT owners noticed any other problems?

Thanks in advance everyone

It's the auto trans that people don't like how it 'shakes', but it hasn't left anyone stranded.

The manual transmission is a good one. It has been used by Ford for many years. I had it in my prior car I had 13years.
It works well, and is fun to use.
I also have the manual transmission in my new 2012 Focus and it is great.

My only slightly negative comment on the Focus with the manual is the slight lack of torque from a stop. It just took a little while to get used to it compared to my prior car.
But now with 2,000 mi I have no issue with it.

As you will see from other articles out here, the Focus does not have the typical 'automatic' transmission, it's more like an auto-manual transmission. So...if you drive it more like it's a manual, then you will be less likely to see any 'shudder' issues.

For example, I haven't noticed a shudder for quite sometime so I thought the issue went away. Then my wife asked me why the car shudders sometime, so I knew then it was a matter of how the car is driven.

The Focus has three modes of transmission and I use each and everyone of them even on a short trip.

The clutch/manual transmission duo on the '12 Focus is stellar. Just wish it was a 6-speed.

Agreed, the manual in the Focus is one of the best out there. The stick shift feels solid and the clutch has a good feel to it, you can feel when it grabs like a good performance clutch allowing for very smooth launches and shifts yet it is very easy on the legs.

I wouldn't worry about the reports no matter which transmission you choose. Drive one for yourself.

It comes with a warranty, don't worry about it.

The DCT is just fine. Some people aren't accustomed to how a manual transmission shifts, so they feel like it's 'rough' ...

Milk the dealer for everything you can. Tint, free oil changes.. ;)

I drove manuals for years with my 2nd and 3rd generation MINIS and all my motorcycles. They all get tiresome in traffic situations and high volume mileage, even though it is second nature and sometimes I'm still reaching for the clutch pedal with my left foot. I have experienced ZERO difficulties with the auto DCT on these cars and I'm on my second car with one. I'd take those reports with a grain of salt and go test drive one. Look, if they can crawl uphill in a parking garage at walking speed with no stops and starts, I'd say it works just fine, wouldn't you?

P.S. My theory is it's all UAW propaganda because the transmission is sourced from Mexico, frankly.

My DC auto wasn't rough at all. I just found it unable to motivate the car very well under certain situations... Quick acceleration from a stop (pause between pressing the pedal and anything happening), and also removing my foot from the accelerator as I'm coming to a red light, only to have the light turn green and I get back on the go pedal... Delay.

But I never experienced any other shutter, stall, etc. conditions that others here have.
