I'm sure Ford will eventually straighten it out... question is, can they do it fast enough to avoid doing any more damage to their new rep for making better cars than they used to? I read somewhere that Ford's been sitting on "torque hole filling" since 1986, waiting for computing power to catch up to the concept. So why sit on idea for 25 years waiting for technology to catch up, only to execute the first transmission to include it, really half-assed?

Luckily I'm not in the market for a new Focus, but if I were... I'd get the plain vanilla audio and a manual transmission. Problem solved.

+1

And, looking at the detailed report (yeah, I'm a subscriber...) the only trouble spot for the Focus is "Power Equipment", where it's rated fair. Undoubtedly because of MFT. Otherwise it's all excellents and very goods...including both Transmission Major (excellent) and Minor (very good). Also, the Focus rated 21% below average, which is just barely outside of their threshold for recommendation.

So looking at the ratings in detail, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Focus is at least average next year. In fact, I'd be surprised otherwise.

*fix'd

(Read: another Microsoft fail) ... not that Apple, Sun, Fujitsu or any other MFG would have fared any better, though Linux may have. Which may have been the best option being the open source user base is that much more helpful and creative. Problem is Linux isn't really intended for mass production for profit things like MFT.

And on a side note, seems to me the young engineers are partly to blame for not listening to and following in the footsteps of their elders. Improving upon a good working design instead of starting from scratch and 'working out the bugs' on the buyer at large as rush to market automotive production seems to be doing lately.

Maybe the transmission from those 12,000 crashes found their way onto the assembly line?

Really?!?! Holy crap god forbid. Down 10 points for poor reliability due to My ford touch and a transmission. If that's all that is holding them back then the other companies need to look out. That's something that can be fixed in the next model year, big deal.
