US Golf R pricing and specs announced today.

Another contender with the ST. Also available in 2 door and most likely priced at LEAST competitively with the ST, if not downright less than.

Good thing I love my SVT a lot or else I'd be looking at trade in value at the local VW dealership...

From the article below...
http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publi...cle_2983.shtml

With 256 horsepower, the Golf R is the most powerful VW sports performance vehicle ever sold in the U.S.—and Volkswagen’s new performance icon is now available in two- and four-doors

• Well-equipped two-door model starts at $33,990
• Sunroof and Navigation models have MSRPs of $35,490 (two-door) and $36,090 (four-door)
• Most powerful Golf production engine to be sold in the U.S.
• Six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive standard
• Bi-Xenon headlights and LED DRLs standard on all models
• On-sale early 2012 as a 2012 model, in both two- and four-door versions

Herndon, VA – Intelligent downsizing. That’s what the new Golf R represents. The heir to the 2004 and 2008 Golf R32 models, the new R manages to have more power, more performance, and consume less gasoline than its illustrious iconic performance forebears. And it offers all this for just $33,990, plus destination, for the two-door Golf R model.

Whereas the R32 models used 3.2-liter VR6 engines, the new Golf R is fitted with a high-output version of the award-winning turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI® engine. This engine makes 256 horsepower, six more than the VR6 fitted into the 2008 R32. As well as offering more power and performance, the Golf R is also more economical, with manufacturer estimated fuel economy of 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway compared with EPA estimated mileage of 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for the prior model.

Like the previous R32 models, the Golf R is equipped with Volkswagen’s 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system: the latest generation of this system can divert up to 100 percent of the torque to the rear wheels, if needed. All Golf R models sold in the U.S will be equipped with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. For the first time, the Golf R will be available in two- and four-door guises as well as in two trim levels: well-equipped Golf R and luxurious Golf R with Sunroof and Navigation.

I'd definitely rock this over a Focus ST. There's no chance I'd be able to afford either though. One can only dream...

So, Volkswagen is altering their offerings to include a three door performance model. Do you hear that Ford?

$36,090 for a 4-door with navigation and sunroof? I get that it's a volkswagen and that the Golf R is awesome but my goodness. I'm pretty sure that a comparable Focus ST is gonna blow this out of the water in the price category....but we'll have to wait and see. If I could afford a Golf R I might get one but that gas mileage is horrific. But for that much money and that kind of mileage I'd rather have a 2012 Ford Mustang with a 5.0

Wait. What???? Are you expecting the Focus ST to come in at the low 30's??? It's very likely going to be under 30k fully loaded with every option. The estimated cost of an RS in the US was 35-40k if Ford brought it over, which they didn't because it didn't make business sense to do so. The ST will almost assuredly NOT start in the $30k's. I think the general consensus in rumors is $26-28k, plus a couple more for loading it with recaro seats and options.

That Golf costs as much as an STI!

Less power than a Mazdaspeed 3, but it has AWD so price it to compete with an STI even though it has less power then a WRX???

I am sorry but I have no respect for that car. I am sure it will sell well in the VW fanboy crowd. But that is NOT a deal at all in my book. It's cool to have a hot hatchback with AWD, but that pricing is not at all reasonable.

It's the same as the R32, more dollars then sense. The R32's were not bad cars, but they were overpriced for what they delivered.

Holy crap yes! A Mustang GT Premium plus extra options! Heck the Gt starts at $29,605!!! $36k for a Golf or 40k for a Boss? Hmm let me think.

I have no doubt VW will sell them. And Honestly if the Golf R was say $28, I would very seriously consider it. But VW over prices them and they know it. They do it because VW fans will pay it! I'll readily agree a Golf R is probably going to have a nicer, better interior then a midlevel WRX. But you can get a very nicely appointed WRX with AWD and more power for $28k!

I don't consider this Golf R even the slightest bit of a competitor to the Focus ST.

I wonder why a mustang guy wouldn't be interested in a Golf R....

Don't be surprised if the ST is coming in near the bottom end of the price comparison. A price point of $31k puts it in direct competition to a base Golf R at $33,990.

So are center exit exhausts that popular these days? I still think a regular dual or single exhaust looks more appealing. The car looks good though, should be a quick little car.

It's priced much higher than the ST, and personally, I don't like the look as much.
If Ford releases an RS in 2014 though, this will compete with that.
Although, I do think Ford's solution to combating torque and understeer will make it one hell of a value in comparison to even the Golf R.
