Ford and Mazda What's the connection.

I was showing my buddy who owns a Mazda 6, 2L my new Focus for the first time and I popped the hood.
He has a quick look and says to me, Your engine is the same as mine.
So we took off a few covers and it is indeed almost identical.
Did some research and found that the Duratec 2.0 Gdi is based on the Mazda L DISI Engine which is used in Mazda 3,Mazda6 (Europe) and the MX5/Miata.
Original output is 110KW (150HP) @ 6500/ 187NM@ 4000.

yep. the Ford Duratec 20/23/25 are identical to the Mazda MZRs. some of MZRs have variable cam timing on the intake cam. until 2012 the Duratec didnt have any variable timing... besides the Fusion 2.3L. if i remember right Ford owns part of Mazda. right now i think the current Focus 2.0L has almost as much power as the 2.5L in the current Mazda 3

Ford owns some Mazda stock and they have a strategic partnership together.

Ford used to own controlling stock in Mazda, and did for a long time, yes your engine is very similar to your buddys, tho there are a few small differences there.

Over the years Ford and Mazda shared many different platforms and engines. and in some cases parts are interchangeable between the 2 brands.

They've been working together for a long time. The old Mazda B5200=Ford Ranger. Pretty much everything except the badges.

The Ford Contour/Mondeo platform was developed by Ford for Billions. (it really was the 'new Ford'. So they tried to sell the in USA for a loss on every one sold. In Europe the Mondeo was more of a success.
Anyway, Ford gave a bunch of the engineering stuff to Mazda and Mazda took that and made to Mazda 6 out of it. Then Ford took what Mazda did for the Mazda 6, and made the Fusion.
Some stuff like that for the Mazda 2 and the Fiesta..
They had a lot of interchange of stuff since Ford bought a pile of Mazda.
I think Ford now has less in mazda than before.
But they still have connections.

Ford sold off most of their Mazda holdings back in their restructuring, they still have partnership though.
