Engines in first generation Focus

Hi, my name is Cindy, This my first time here on forum.

I am looking to buy a Focus wagon 2000-2006.

I noticed a few cars for sale had engines rebuilt, one comment "the good engine", I don't member which years.
how many different types of engines are there in these cars and are which are good or bad?

Thanks.

If you can find one, I'd recommend one with a 2.3 Duratec engine. It's a bit larger than the 2.0 engine you find in most of them.

You can identify the 2.3 engine by a 'Z' for the 8th digit of the V.I.N.

For instance: 3FAFP31Z44R107925

You will only find the 2.3 in the 2003 and 2004 wagons.....

The engines that were available on a Focus were Spi, Zetec, and Duratec; I can't tell you if they all were available in the Wagon or not. That said, the only engine that should be avoided is the Spi, they have an issue of dropping the valves. The other two, Zetec and Duratec, are very stout engines and in general should last for a few hundred thousand miles depending on how they were treated in their previous life.

Sounds like you found yourself a Zetec. You should be good to go.

PS. If you look under the hood, it should say Zetec on it. Both my Foci have.

Early year 2000 base wagons had SPI, but are rare.
