1964 Ford Fairlane 500 Commands $700,000 at Auction

Just the Facts:

- A custom 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 fetched $700,000 at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas over the weekend, nearly three times as much as a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
- The Fairlane was the top-grossing vehicle at the auction and a sympathetic favorite, since proceeds will benefit wounded veterans through the Armed Forces Federation.
- The Fairlane debuted at the 2009 SEMA Show and was used to launch Barrett-Jackson Custom Color paints.

LAS VEGAS
— A custom 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 fetched $700,000 at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas over the weekend, nearly three times as much as a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

The Fairlane was the top grossing vehicle at the auction and a sympathetic favorite, since proceeds will benefit wounded veterans through the Armed Forces Federation.

The Camaro — the first of its kind to be offered to be public — fetched $250,000 at the auction.

The Fairlane is equipped with a 522-horsepower Roush 427 IR V8 linked to a Tremec TKO 600 McCloud dual-disc transmission. Details include custom valve covers, custom fender badges and air conditioning. It was part of the personal collection of Barrett-Jackson President Steve Davis. The winning bidder was not identified.

The Fairlane debuted at the 2009 SEMA Show and was used to launch Barrett-Jackson Custom Color paints. The car features Red Hot Chili Pepper exterior paint.

Inside Line says: Maybe a ridiculous amount of money for a Ford Fairlane, but all for a good cause.

That's a great car, but $700,000?? I mean it's for the good cause, but holy smokes that is a lot for what you're getting.

I honestly kind of hate how expensive old cars have gotten... I bought a 1968 Satellite 2 dr. hardtop with 383, AT, AC, PS, PB, dual exhaust, lots of unusual options, for 3,000 bucks back in the mid-90's. It wasn't perfect but it got many compliments and second looks, so condition was decent. That price today wouldn't even buy me a rusted-out wreck. The commoditization of the antique car hobby has priced those of us who aren't high-dollar-earners right out of the ability to participate.
