01 2.0 overheating

While driving the other day my car started to over heat, I pulled over saw that all the antifreeze had burned up and the fan was not kicking on. The engine light had come on a few days earlier and it was insufficent temp to close cooling loop( i think) which I was told could be a few things.

My initial thoughts are sticking thermostat or some other sensor that controls fan. Im an amateur hack at best, so any ideas and insight are appreciated.
