Dodge Caliber's Alfa Romeo-based replacement spotted wearing crosshairs

When we first caught wind of the Fiat intention to get cozy with Chrysler, our first thoughts leapt to the slew of sexy Italian compacts that could conceivably make their way to the states. Of all the hardware that could potentially be Americanized, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta was the one hatch that had our loins stirring the most. Now our elite squad of spy photographers have nabbed a few photos of a four-door version of the hatch wearing a split crosshair grille. From the looks of things, these are full-production spec prototypes out for desert testing. The whispers kicking around the web lead us to believe that the car will be called the Hornet and should lock horns nicely with metal like the Ford Focus.

To say that we can't wait to usher the Caliber out the door is an understatement. Given that the compact segment has grown into a fiercely competitive slice of the market, Dodge needs hardware that can perform on style, efficiency and economy. Here's hoping the Hornet is up to the task.

While the vehicle in the image above was originally photographed with matte black vinyl covering its flanks, we've colorized the sheet metal to give us a better idea of what to expect from the sedan version of the car.Dodge Caliber's Alfa Romeo-based replacement spotted wearing crosshairs originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 11:28:00 EST.

That is a nasty looking front end; I love it. Let's hope Dodge doesn't flop another compact car.

Chryco can style cars pretty nice. Even in theory, there are some nice cars out there - Charger, Challenger. I just can't trust a Chrysler product farther than I can push it. Wayyyyyyyyy too many problems with them in the past.

With that said, I'd be interested in knowing where this is built.

^^ Agreed. Dodge just hasn't done so good in the low cost car segments (think Caliber and Avanger). They always look too plasticy for my taste.

Hey, Lowville!

When I got the Focus I was looking at the Calibur and its bretheren Compass and Patriot. Wasn't impressed with their cheap interior feel. Plus the price for them and what they are is just too up there for me.

^^^ Lol

Yeah, Chrysler in general with the exception of the Rams, some Jeeps, and the 300/Charger couldn't make a good car before the bailout. Now with new management and Fiat, I have seen some impressive cars come from them. I am a die hard Ford fan so I will never buy one but I still have much respect for a good car when I see one.

Thing looks gorgeous. It took a company like Alfa Romeo to de-uglify the Dodge brand. Can't wait to see the production version of this.

I love my old Mopars, but gave up on the brand due to the crap they started building in the 90's. I did like the turbo cars of the 80's though. I had a lot of fun in those. I'm not sure about the new stuff either, but although I wouldn't own one, I wouldn't call the Neon a sales failure. It would be a good thing for Chrysler to lose the Mitsu influence on their small cars IMO. I've worked on a few Avengers and Neons.

They need to get someone who can come up with original names for the cars too. Ford releases one retro-Stang and the whole world goes crazy with retro stuff. I've seen bumble bees on trucks (WTH?), and "glory days" styled cars all over the place. The Hornet was an AMC, but still, go original dudes. They are probably still reeling over the Caliber failure. IMO Chrysler would be better off selling Fiats, and just concentrating on the big cars and trucks until they get their act together. Chrysler + Alfa may = pretty, but it won't = reliable or fuel efficient. People are becoming more utilitarian in the US due to rising costs and falling wages on everything.

I really like(d) AMC. Every time I look at a new Jeep I get sick at what Chryco has done to completely ruin the brand by making Jeeps expensive, complicated, not off-road-capable pieces of Chrysler garbage.

I'm assuming when Chrysler bought out AMC they got the rights to the names, too?

Hornets were NEAT cars. Coupe, sedan, hatch, wagon ... the first AWD cars like that.
