Question Has anyone added a third row seat?

I wasn't sure where to post this but my question is has anyone installed a third seat? I recently had twins so I bought a big suv and hate the gas milage. it pretty much ended our let's go for a drive nights. And i Just found out the people that owned it before us hollowed out the cats. So I thought of selling the suv and buying a station wagon focus and throwing a 6th seat in it. Anyone done this or know the laws that would slow or stop me from doing this?

What would you bolt the seats to? Is there anything sufficient to attach them to there? You can't just throw a couple bolts through the floor board...and you'll probably run into issues with the spare being there as well. Then how are you sure it will be safe? Where will you install seat belts? Are there issues with airbags in that area? What if the car was not designed to have seats in that area in regards to rear/side impacts? All questions you should be asking yourself, and/or whoever is doing the work for you.

How many kids do you have? Do you just have two? If so, why the need for more seats? If you have more...well, that's the cost of doing business. Can't have a small, sporty, fun to drive car AND carry a bunch of people/stuff at the same time.

I would suggest a crossover, it's probably the smallest vehicle you can get with more then 5 seats. Minivans also get pretty decent mileage.

I don't think you'll find anyone willing to do the work for you, at least not with some assurance of safety. And I wouldn't put kids back there, that's for sure...and all that's assuming you're not running afoul of any state or federal law (and I bet you would, too).

I read the post wrong I thought you were saying that I would put my kids in danger, that's not my question I'm wondering if their is an issue with safety I can put it back there that's not hard but would it be safe/legal? I would reinforce the locations that it's bolted to and the seatbelts would be installed at the right angle's by is that a crumple zone? Does anyone know.

I bet it would be a royal pain in the you know what to try to buckle a car seat in the 3rd row seat of a car that small and short. When my kids were small(I have 3,all teenagers now ),I hated even strapping them into the back seat of the 4 door car that I used for work, and occasionally had to haul them around in. I was much happier with the wife's(at the time) mini van then the 4 door jeep cherokee we had. Now my kids are older, wear seat belts, fasten themselves in,so a 2 door car isn't out of the question. If it were me,I would use the SUV for only when I needed to haul the kids around, and the car for everything else, and keep the car for when the kids get older.

I have 4 kids 7,3,and twin 16month olds. Yea I pretty much only use the truck for when the whOle family needs to go but It does suck when we go through a 100 dollars of gas in a week. I really appreciate the input youguys give I knOw it's not the best idea but it was a thought.

Don't do it. The Focus wagon wasn't designed to have a third seat. The 'well' in the back isn't shaped properly, the pillars where the shoulder belts would go already have the belts for the second seat attached to them. I wouldn't put any more attachments there.

You want to make sure your kids are safe don't you? If you want to buy a Focus wagon and them add a third seat, please don't. Buy a proper vehicle that has enough seats in it already - even if it's a minivan.

ford doesn't make one,but some other companies make smaller suvs that have a 3rd row seat without the bad gas mileage of the big ones
