to expand on what disciplerocks said...

1. Engine- the saleen has a 2.3/2.0 (depending on year) at ~152hp, and ~155lb tq. The SVT has a 2.0 at 170/145 respectively. On the strip, the SVT will hit 60 faster, but is not as responsive to engine modifications. The saleen also came with a 75shot of nitrous, but in most states is not legal to use, and thus was not hooked up from the factory. Hooking the nitrus up voids the engines warranty, but will knock 0-60 times from 8.2ish to 6.3ish.

2. Brakes- the saleen uses the stock brakes, including the rear drums, a big brake kit for the front was available for another 1,300. The SVT came stock with bigger front disks, and rear disks.

3. Body- the Saleen came with a full body kit, including hoodscoop and rear wing. The svt has a much less pronounced kit though IMO its more refined look.

4. suspension- saleen put better suspension on the n20, but because the frames remain the same, the performance difference between the two is negligible. The SVT also has upgraded suspension, but its not quite as good.

5. interior - saleen took the regular interior, and added some embroidered leather seats, white gauge plates, and a few other nick-nacks. The SVT came with similar leather seats with colored cloth centers, in either blue or red, it also had white glowing gauge faces, and extra oil temp/pressure gauges. In 2003 and 2004 models, they added the European Appearance Package (EAP), which came with recaros. The SVT had an option for the audiophile package which included a 6-disk cd changer and a subwoofer, for only a few hundred more, the saleen has a alpine stereo option for another $2,700.

6. price - the SVT had a base price of 17,995 and had about $4000 worth of optional extras when it was new compared to the ~$25,000 for the saleen which has about $8,000 worth of optional extras.

My opinion:

The Saleen was designed to attract a certain market, besides the outlandish price and body kit, its effectively a stock focus. You can argue that the n20 makes it different, but frankly, nitrus is for drag racing only, and the focus is anything but a drag car. The SVT got it right, without being too over the top, it managed to look nice, perform well, and meet the lower price range.

Don't forget about the SVT's 6-speed transmission versus the Saleen's 5-speed

Yes the Duratec was never available with anything but the basic 5-speed MTX-75 as a manual transmission.

A couple of corrections. I'm not sure about the numbers in 2004, but of the 200 made in 05, only 75 were the N2O model with the nitrous. The rest were s121 models, without nitrous.

Also, in 04 the seats were special recaro race seats.

Other than that all the other info is spot on.
