Brand new member looking at an 03 SVT.

Brand new to this forum so sorry if I dumped this thread in the wrong place.

I currently own an 04 GTO with 52000 on the odo, due to employment mishaps I've been looking to trade it in on something cheaper to drive. My insurance is sky high not to mention what it costs to feed it. Its a very hungry car!

I have my eyes on an 03 SVT with 70000 on the odo, they are asking $10000 for it. The car is a one owner and spent its days in Arizona. Needless to say it is very clean and might just fit my needs as I am going back to school next month.

I know really nothing about these cars so I thought I would drop a line and see what you guys think. I think the price seems high but, like I said there isn't a scratch on it and they have all of the maintenance records and dealer services. Carfax is as clean as it has never been in an accident.

With the price of used cars these days its hard for me to get a good gauge on how much or how little to pay.

Thanks for any insight or advise.
Adam

Dont worry the thread isn't in the wrong section but I don't know about if it is a rip off I think it is ok but I'm also a new member so idk. But do you know if it has had the timing belt replace because you want to replace it close to 100k miles because the person who Owned mine didn't replace it and it broke at 110k and now it only runs on 2 cylinders. But I hope I can fix that quickly. So yea I would just wait until a more experienced member posts here.

You should be able to buy that car for $7-7.5k all day every day. The guy is dreaming big time. Cruise the buy sell trade forums here, they're mostly realistic prices.

Wow he wants 10K? They are rare but not worth that much. But like Baits said, cruise BST and you WILL find a nice one. Probably onewith the most important mods already done to it.

Example. I got my 03 Red SVT with 85k miles for $4700. Found it on craigslist. Car had already installed new coilovers, magnaflow exhaust, roush mid wing and couple extras.
For 10k you can find 08 Focus with less than 80k miles in my area.
So yeah, 10k for that SVT is waaaaaaaay too much.

Now that Ive looked around tonight I understand what you guys are saying.
I hate to get rid of the Goat its such a great car except the insurance and MPG.

That's why I started looking at the SVT's. I really like the way they look and the price seems right. I looked at the Cobalt SS, I know that word is off limits around here. Its a cheap ass car with really nothing to offer and I'm a mod guy and want a car to play with so I thought this would be a good way to go.

Thanks again

Unless you really want a 10k SVT, there's one on eBay with only 5k miles :). If you could get that one for 10grand it's like buying a brand new car. New, they were around 17k I think.

There is thread about it: Ebay Find: 5,080 Miles 2002 Focus SVT

It mostly depends on the year, and options the car has, if its a fully equiped SVT with the EAP package, i could see justifying maybe $8500, but thats if they changed the timing belt, have new tires, and new shocks/struts, or in other words, PERFECT condition.'

The EAP focus is easy to spot by a few key points, 1. it has HID Projector headlights, 2. It has Black Leather Recaro Seats, 3. it has 15 spoke wheels.

That being said, the price is definitely too high, so im sure you can find a better deal around.

Just keep in mind, SVTfs have a few notable problems once they reach the 70k area.

-timing belts need to be replaced at 70k, unless you want to run the risk of breaking one and toasting your engine
-alternators can be a bit picky, as can their wiring harnesses.
-check the thermostat housing to make sure its not leaking. its an easy fix if it is, but thats still something to consider
- check the clutch pedal, is there any fluid on it? the clutch master cylinders are known to leak.

+ all the normal stuff.
