2012 Orange Peel?

My girlfriend and I were rolling around a Ford lot late last night looking at Foci before we receive ours. Then we noticed under the bright dealer lights, Most of the 20 or so Foci on the lot were orange peeled at least a little bit, but most noticeable on the 4 candy blue cars they had, the color we ordered. Further down the line was a long row of Fusions. The Fusions paint seemed all very smooth and seamless. The orange peel wasn't really stand out noticeable but could be seen under the lights for sure.

Makes me wonder, are they having some kind of paint quality control issues at the factory? Just a bad batch of paint jobs arrived at that lot? Not sure what to expect now when I get mine. However, even my cheap, crude Sunfire has a flawless smooth paint job. I would expect no less on the Focus... or really any other car in this day and age.... Ok, Maybe Chrysler.

I will have to look it over real good. It just has me concerned as mine is due to arrive in 3-4 weeks. The worst on the lot we seen last night was a blue candy hatch back. I thought it looked funny and then I turned my car to shine my head lights on it. The orange peel was significant enough that the paint obvioiusly didn't shine to the full potential it should have.

Observing other cars around the lot. I mentioned the Fusions looked good. The was a row of Escapes with flawless paint. Fiestas looked good for the most part but I noticed a bit of peel on some. Also saw a few F-series with a bit of peel.

I'm hoping I didn't waste my time in this long wait.

Any Ford officials listening?

ORANGE PEEL

(Poor Flow, Texture)

Paint film having an uneven texture that resembles the skin of an orange.
CAUSE

Under reduction and/or air pressure too low.
Thinner/reducer evaporates too fast for spray conditions.
Excessive film thickness or piling on of heavy wet coats.
Improper spray gun set-up.
Improper painting technique.

REPAIR

Compound or polish to reduce surface texture.
Or, sand smooth with 1200 or finer grit sandpaper, compound and polish to restore gloss.
Or, sand smooth and refinish.
................................................................................................................................................ Look at an orange, see all the bumps, orange peel is a term that people use when the paint looks like it............

I searched around and this is the best picture I could find on Google. I have this "orange peel" effect on my car also. I looked around and noticed that almost every new car has it too. I thought it was some intentional fancy light refraction effect. I didn't even know this was considered a defect. Personally I don't have a problem with it. Almost 70k miles and my car still looks brand new. Anyway good luck trying to get the issue resolved.

EDIT: Found this bit of information too...

Quote:
it is a result of a liquid (paint) being diffused by air, aka- SPRAY PAINTING.
it will not get better, and will not get worse. see my post on the first page.

NEW car metal is dipped in an electrocoating-type acid bath that prepares the surface for painting. then after the car is painted, it is charged with an electric current to "adhere" the paint to the metal. similar to powder coating. once bonded, it is cleared, then inspected for flaws. if flaws are found, and there will be some, (as long as it is within a certain tolerance level) traditional bodyshop methods then apply.
Quote:
the same companies that supply the manufacture their paint, such as DuPont, PPG and Siemens, also supply the bodyshops. the difference is that a bodyshop uses a human with a gravity fed airgun to paint cars. not a robot that can adapt to paint flow, air temperature, relative humidity and overall conditions, instantly.

once the car is painted in the paint booth it is baked at usually 180+/- degrees for an hour or so to cure the paint. at this point, it is what is referred to as 'soft paint'. the paint doesnt cure until it has time to set. usually about 2 weeks. same as the manufacturer, (same paint, usually). those cars sit on a MASSIVE holding yard while they cure. then wrapped in that white vinyl stuff and prepped for shipping.

EVERY CAR and i will repeat **EVERY CAR** has orange peel.
depending on the painting process, some are worse than others.
This sounds pretty accurate. Walk outside on any street and check out other new cars. Unless it's a Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc. with premium paint, chances are you'll see some orange peel if you look closely at the right angle.

My 2012's Kona Blue is pretty darn flawless but its true, most new cars are sprayed by a robot and not wet sanded or compounded afterwards so will have slightly peeley paint. My 2004 has been custom painted and wet sanded by a human so it has dripping wet looking paint.
