Girlfriends got a lemon!

Sorry if this is a tad off topic but it is car related! So I'm 19 and my girlfriend and I have been together for a year or so and she told me today she finally got a car! This makes my life much easier as I dont have to drive an hour round trip every time I want to see her, but it also gives me a headache. You see, I'm a car guy, as such whenever one of my friends is having an issue with their car (and at my age that means a bunch of mid 90's toyotas) they come to me. Naturally I promised my girlfriend that whatever car she bought I'd help her out with to save her money. (and to get brownie points) Of course, I begged her not to get something too unreliable so she doesn't go broke, so what does she buy? A Vw beetle with over 100k on it!!! Literally within a day she calls me saying her speedometer doesn't work sometimes, the headlights blink like strobe-lights, the cd player randomly ejects itself, and she got like 3 different check engine lights!!! Gotta love German electronics. The best part? The dealer is claiming its a "pre-existing condition" and they're not liable to fix jack. Looks like I've got a few good repair sessions in front of me.

I showed her several used Foci (Focus's?) in the area but after seeing my shiny new 2012 she thought the old ones were "cheap looking and slow" lmao. Well I guess a Mazda sucks if you compare it to a Mercedes so to speak, but I'd be happy with either one. It's the cute factor that sold her, If I knew she had the means I'd steer her towards a Fiat 500 or a Mazda2, but her dads giving her a $6000 limit so there isn't much wiggle room. Now if only I could find a pink Miata with 80k or so.....

check on your laws regarding a "cooling off" period. Cali got rid of it a few years ago and what that means is you have to fork over some extra cash to be allowed to return it and also you would only be able to drive it very little. They literally make you sign a waiver saying you will not return this car. Hopefully your state has the cooling off period and you can return that piece.

Don't bother trying to fix electrical issues on VW's yourself, the early 2000's were notorious for gremlins in the electrical system and were not really fixed until 2006 and up. Unless you have the tools for electrical diag take it to a repair shop, it will cost you less than if you start digging in yourself.

I took some electrical engineering courses at my college, so I've got the know-how and tools to do a few things myself, but for the most part I'm just fixing non-electrical issues. Given how many things are wrong already I'm guessing there's quite a few mechanical issues that need work; I probably should have been more clear on that. My guess is a few sensors need replacing for the speedometer, but it will be a pain figuring out which ones. Stereos are no problem seeing how they come relatively cheap these days, I'll just order a new head unit off crutchfield or something. Those headlights will need professional attention though.

The speedo is controlled by the BCM, which is controlled b the PCM. Without the correct/exact FSM you won't get far diagnosing it. And it probably isn't a sensor issue.

But being most things in VW's are still negatively switched, make sure all the ground points you can find are clean and tight. It's the biggest problem and easiest to fix, generally.

Ive seen issues with the Bug before, just looking at them now makes me feel a little sick..
