Fuel Question

I'm at my great grandmas house and my gas gauge and the little info box says 0 miles to E I need to know how far I can drive it to the nearest gas station.

The nearest one is about 3-4 miles away. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Others have said they can sometimes go 10+ miles when on 0 miles left. But, who likes to test those sort of things. Turn the a/c off, windows down, and go slow.

Or, if there are no lights between you and the gas station, accelerate until the gas cuts out and coast with the momentum.

I know that the fuel gauge on mine reads empty when I have a half gallon left. So that means you should have a range of 10 miles safe. SHOULD.

You could also walk down to the gas station and fill up a jerry can so that you don't have to test the theory.

^^My first thought. Running out of gas in these new-fangled fuel injected cars is not the no-big-deal inconvenience it used to be. Enjoy the walk, and be thankful You don't live in TX where it's still over 100+ temps every day. Oh, and a 1 gal can will be plenty, no sense in dragging 50 lbs worth of gas AND can around for 6-8 miles.

Idling and going super slow actually kills fuel economy. But if you're talking "slow" in the sense of not pounding on the gas pedal to accelerate rapidly, then yeah that's a good idea.

Most cars run optimally between 55-65 mph (depending on transmission gears). Build up gradual speed to that point (if it's safe to do so) and coast to complete stops whenever possible.

You'll very likely make it to a gas station if you're gentle on the throttle. If you don't want to risk it then have a friend drive over with a portable tank of gas and fill up on the spot.

EDIT: Also running out of gas isn't a huge deal. I mean it's probably not good for your fuel pump (overheating) if you habitually let it run very low... but besides that it's not going to destroy your car.

FTFY

To the OP, does your granny have a lawn mower? If yes, there is probably a gas can with some gas in it or stop over at neighbors and borrower theirs.

This always reminds me of this

KRAMER: Oh, I’ve been in the slash many times. This is nothing. You’ll get used to it. Just, (Makes a popping sound) get it out of your mind.

RICK: Have you ever been completely below the slash?

KRAMER: Well, I almost did once, and I blacked out. When I came to, the car was in a ditch, and the tank was full. I don’t know who did it, and I never got to thank them.

More importantly, how many gallons did the car take?

Our cars (at least mine) has a 14 gallon tank, how close were you to that number?

(if you actually put in $40.00, unless gas was less than 3$ a gallon you would have had plenty enough gas to get to the gas station)
