Speed and gas mileage?

So ive been seeing alot of posts about people babying there cars to get good gas mileage. I was wondering everyones thoughts on this.
I take a trip to my old neighborhood every couple weeks. Round trip is around 120 miles.

I tend to speed, like 80-87ish the whole time (mostly night driving) and i use a little less than a quarter tank. (3 gallons)
Thats a little more than 40 mpg.
How do i get such good mpg when people have to baby it to get 30mpg?

That's a highly inaccurate way to calculate fuel economy... so you're probably not getting 40mpgs.

No. It probably is accurate.
The problem is others are calculating average mileage. Getting up to speed takes more fuel than sustaining a speed. So if you'd go on a interstate trip where you didn't stop you'd get good mileage. I've got ~50mpg with mine on the interstate, years and years ago. But my average was 28mpg.

It's easy. Your not getting 40 mpg (us) at 80 plus mph.

Try this. Fill your tank. Do the 120 mile trip at 85 mph. Fill the tank. Do the math.

One thing to note is that on my Focus the first quarter tank *on the gauge* tends to last between 120 and 135 miles, while the remainder of the tank lasts to a total mileage between 320 and 360 miles.

So, clearly my gauge shows the first quarter lasting longer.

You could check the accuracy of your numbers by filling up, taking your drive, and then filling up at the end to determine the real amount of gas used.
