i took on the dragon today. who else has done it?

it has many names. Deals Gap, US-129, Dragon's Tail or Tail of the Dragon, however you want to say it, it doesnt matter because its badass either way. it is arguably one of the best driver's roads in the united states. it is 318 hair pin turns over an 11 mile stretch of road that goes between north carolina and tennessee. freaking bad ASS! well i just took it on today in the focus and had a blast. had so much fun that i may have caused some guy in a miata to push a little bit too hard and wreck. oops oh well its not my fault i didnt make him try to keep up with me. the first go was just a brisk shake down. very little WOT, not really pushing it in the turns, just getting a feel for it since id never had the focus down it before. the second time though i let her have it pretty good when the radar detector wasnt going berserk. the cops are insane out there. i only had one occurrence of oversteer when i waited too long to brake but it was just a tiny bit and didnt hurt me or the car any. i had an absolute blast and now i can say ive been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. since i ddi actually buy a t-shirt. now i gotta go back again so i can get the shot glass. ill be up there a pretty good amount over the next few years i would be willing to wager. i just moved my girl into her new apartment at western carolina university and its only about 45 minutes to an hour away from the dragon so im happy. anybody that wants to go most definitely should its a hell of a gas! just please invest in a good radar detector to save yourself from a ticket. 5mph over the speed limit is a good enough excuse for them to pull you up there if your car is sporty looking or seems to have been modified at all. and please watch out for the people on motorcycles out there. there are ALOT of them and some of them are alot more idiotic than others. i got passed by a busa at one point at about 70mph (speed limit 30mph) only to watch him run it up an embankment at the next curve. he was okay, the bike wasnt, the cop at the next turn patched him up and got him a ride back LOL.

just wanted to share my experience. it was so much fun i just couldnt stand to keep it to myself. if anybody goes, be safe first and have fun second! its a good philosophy to live by!

If the photographers were out look at the front page or www.us129photos.com next week ( Tuesday) see if you are in the voting for a free poster

I was there with my Bronco in May .

see weekly winners page for my trip in my early bronco, had to rally the troops to win the poster with 31K votes

http://www.us129photos.com/component...o-winners.html

"April 25th Winners - with 15k and 31k votes respectively, these two have some serious fans!"

I have loose plans to go up there in early October for the drive and the foilage. Thinking of taking US 58 west out of Hampton Roads (Virginia), down the Blue Ridge Parkway and over the section that they built off site and flew in with heavy lift helicopters to avoid damaging the terrain and then up the Dragon. I don't plan to get crazy, as my car is basically stock and could use better tires, but I'd still enjoy the drive. There are also 18 wheelers out there, as it is the route between NC and TN, so you have to be careful.

I love the place , The Dragon is like no other 11 miles I have ever been on , I have had the pleasure of doing the dragon 13 times and most times we spend the day there , I have fought the Dragon with
06 Screamin Eagle Fat Boy
2009 zx14
Z06 Corvette
SC Mini
SVT Turbo Focus
ZX3 Turbo Focus

I have rode the Dragon 13 Diff times and I would say 6-8 times each day we went and lover it more each time , I have not had the pleasure to hang anything on the Tree of shame but thats a good thing LOL

and this is the reason I have no desire to go there. Now if they do a block off free run day I am game.

Has become too much of a tourist attraction these days. Typically lots of traffic and idiots that don't stay in their own lane. There are plenty of other fantastic roads in western NC that don't have these problems.
