Automatic 2.0. Put 100 mi on it so far. I like it. I think I give it a slight edge over my '09 SE auto. a/c is better. It just feels like a slightly sportier and better overall package. Power is about the same. Ride is a bit harsher. Interior is decent. Overall a nice fun little ride. '12 Focus is probably nicer though.

I drive an '07 Mazda 3i, Auto. 2.0. I consistently get 33 MPG in mixed driving. 37 MPG on the highway. My wife has ordered a 2012 Focus SE. I've only ridden in the Focus on a test drive. I found it a bit claustrophobic compared to the Mazda. Inside storage/glove box, etc. on the Mazda beats the Focus in every way. I hope her Focus gets comparable or better mileage. I can't imagine the Focus will handle any better than the Mazda.

At least she didn't get Corolla; I'd have to wear a bag over my head to ride in that thing.

So after a week of driving the 3, one major annoyance. No matter what I do, my right knee hits the edge of the center console. Just not enough space there and I'm avg height and weight. Drove my brother's bigger Altima rental and so much more room there...zero rubbing.

My mom has an 07 3 with the 2.3 and an Auto. It is a fun car to drive handles great, stops well, and accelerates decently. Definitely makes me wish my 08 had the 2.3 and not the 2.0.

Right Knee space on Mazda 3

I agree with you here. It took me literally weeks to get the seat adjustment right on my Mazda 3i so that it felt right. I'm still not 100% happy with the arrangement, but now it is pretty comfortable. I'm 5'11" and 160 lbs. The 3i is still a great car overall.

I'm 5'10", 175.....with the seat far back it helped but not enough. Curious to see difference in my Focus later. But as fun as the 3 was, I was sick of my knee rubbing all the time. Enough so that I'd pass on one. I couldn't get my knee to rub if I tried in the Altima 2.5. Imprressed with that car too minus the flat hardish seats.

Got back in my '09 last night. Yup...the bottom of the center console definitely does not come out as far as the Mazda 3. My right leg or knee doesn't hit at all. At least 3 more inches of room or so. The Focus wins big in that department for me. Focus rides less sporty in comparison and is a less polished package but not my much. Interior in the Focus is cheaper. But the ride is slightly less harsh than the Mazda. My right leg not banging the console though is priceless for me though.

Have you tried moving the seat back? I never understood why some people have this problem with rubbing their knee against the center console. I've heard this complaint about a lot of cars, but I still don't get it. I'm just trying to visualize it in my head...

I mean really, the only way I can picture it is if the person has their seat pushed way up too close to the steering wheel. Center consoles don't just magically bulge out towards the kneecaps. I don't see that design often (except the Elantra). But either way proper driving ergonomics means your legs go straight towards the pedals with your knees slightly bent. Like so...

But even this guy needs to adjust his seat back further and pull telescopic steering wheel back a bit.

It depends on how you rest your foot on the pedals. I rub my knee in all the cars I can think of the way I press on the gas pedal unless I sit a bunch back and lower the seat height and I'm 5'10 150lbs

Exactly. My foot is always sort of sideways on the pedal so my knee angles out a bit. I just know the 3 doesn't allow for much of that or knee will rub.
