Sometimes I hate how logical math is ...

311,000,000 people
320,500,000 gallons/day
116,982,500,000 gallons/yr
15,000 miles/year

376 gallons/year/person
39.8 Average MPG/year

Saving 1 gallon/person/year

311,000,000 people
319,647,945 gallons/day
116,671,500,000 gallons/yr
15,000 miles/year

375 gallons/year/person
39.98 Average MPG/year

@ $3.70/gallon

That is a savings of $1,150,700,000/year by just getting 0.1MPG more.

*note, data may be inaccurate and rounding errors.

But the average MPG is skewed because not everything that uses Gasoline drives, ATV's, lawn and garden equipment, off highway equipment, boats, etc. Even still it goes to show how a small pebble can create a wave.

time to clean the cars up. All the crap in it adds weight that could result in higher mpg if it is removed

Does this mean I should empty out the dog crate, roofing shingles, tool chest, booster pack, two ball hitches, hammer, hunting knife, tire pump, rain and winter coats, string trimmer, and hay bale?

Yew betcha!! And while you are at it, roof racks, whether empty or full are huge gas users. Want to carry your kayak to the water! Sure, but leave it off the rest of the time!
Great post, iminhell!
