New or Used: Which do you prefer.

Just curious which people prefer: buying a new car off the lot or a used one either a year or several years old.

I have to say that I prefer used for two reasons. First, I have so far had very good luck with used cars and there reliability and definitively can't complain about the lower cost over a new car. Plus, the money you saved can be put towards repairs when needed and modifying it which brings me to the second reason. I have been able to do a lot of things with my car that I would never dare to do to a new car. It may be a little weird but whenever I am in a new car, I feel like I have to be so careful and wouldn't want to modify hardly anything. With a used car, I can worry much less about resale value and more about having fun with it.

That is just my opinion and I would like to here yours.

I like and try to get new, but I am perfectly happy with 1-3 years old

I see the benefits of buying used, but honestly, I just don't like the idea of someone using a car before me... I like the idea of having a brand new car exactly as I ordered it.

NEW all the way (if you can afford it)

I liked used my self.. You get a bigger bang for your buck, in my case no car payment. Plus insurance is cheaper, parts are cheaper. Used is great for the warranty etc, plus no ahole before you got to jerry rig anything up. But I prefer used over new..

I usually try to buy a year old. Bought my 09 f-150 a year old with 10k on it for $26K brand new it would've cost me 35-40k to get the supercrew, 4wd, bigger motor and the add ons. I'd buy new if I could afford it but I can't get over that hit you take as soon as it leaves the lot when it's new.

I like to buy the "old" new cars lol. Bought a '10 focus after the '11's were rolling out and got it for 15.3k which I think is a good deal for an SES.

I usually like to buy used, I like being able to buy a car that was $30-$40k new for less than half that. But the.new Focus is so sweet, and we could afford to order one exactly how we wanted it, so we broke tradition.

Previously a few year old used car made a lot more financial sense. Given the outlandish prices of used cars today not so much...

When I can go to a dealer and get a new car for 10% more than a 2 year old used one, I'll take the new car. When I can get a 2-3 year old used car for 50% of the cost of a new one, I'll take the used car.

I've always bought used, anywhere from very slightly used (the Focus was 8 months old when I bought it), to decades old. The kind of cars I have an interest in either haven't been made in years, or don't fit my budget as a new car so used is the only way to go. If I wanted to buy a brand new car, to keep the price affordable it would have to be a car that was a boring compromise (think bland vanilla compact car) and that's no good.

This thread made me think of this commercial:

I do both. If I find a deal on a 1-3 year old vehicle that I know the history on I will buy used, otherwise I buy new. I typically keep my vehicles for at least 10 years so I don't concern my self about depreciation or trade in value. I also do all my own repairs so I am not concerned about an older vehicle braking down.
