Have cars gotten too technically advanced?

I just got my Motor Trend today and found one letter interesting. The writer posed the question of whether cars have gotten so technically advanced on the inside with there syncs and other features that it detracts from the driving experiences. I was wondering what some of your opinions are on this.

I obviously come from the perspective of owning a simple car with my 2002 Focus but that is one of the things I like about it. Everything I need is right there at the press of a button: no menus required. And who needs blue tooth to talk on there phones when they should be driving. This is just my opinion and if I got used to some of the new tech, I would probably fall in love with some of it, but I would love to know what your opinions on this are.

i detail at a ford dealership so i've gotten to play around with some of their new stuff and a lot of it is pretty cool. the thing i find the stupidest out of all the new technology is the self parking, really? you can't park your car by yourself?

I am a Auto and Deisel Tech and have been in the auto trade since I was a young kid and the diesel for ten years. Even large trucks have things you would find crazy like International has multiplex wireing and all are useing emissions equipment now. But this is just the evelution of the trades. Just like cell phones and Home computers. The car and truck company's make things better and more use full for the general public. Just take your Focus and compare it to 82 Escort. What you find simple now would blow even the best Auto Tech's mind back then. I have always said the best car is the one with the least things to go wrong but most pepole want more and that is what they will get till they can't aford to buy or lease a new car. Look at the price of a new Cadillac. I paid the same or less for my first house in 1995.

flame has got a point. vehicles have been getting overly complex, and therefore costing a lot more. but what gets me is why ford doesnt set things up where you start with a base car, ten add the options you want , without grouping them into packs or omitting certain things from trim levels. for example, in order to get teh titainuim trim pack on a 2012 you ahve to ahve an automatic trans. sucky for those who want to a manual trans car that doesnt look utilitarian.

You are all coming up with good points. As was said, it's not so much the option of having the technology that I don't like, its having it pushed on you even if you don't want it. I don't care what other people have on their cars if they want and use it, but I wouldn't use half the available features so why should I have to pay for them?

I can see your all's points, but me personally, love all the new gadgets. My 2011 F150 has everything but the NAV, and I would of got that if I could, but due to shortages from Japan when I ordered my truck, I was unable to. But I love playing with all the stuff, dont do it when I am driving as much, but its nice to be able to monitor and look at so many different things. Sync is pretty awesome too, handsfree, bluetooth driving is great. Its a great safety feature too, its nice coming home from work, and being able to call my wife and ask whats for dinner without fumbling with my phone which is not safe. To think that people wont use cell phones while driving is denying the impossible, so why not make it safer for them.

Its just one of those feature that make my truck so much more comfortable and fun to drive. I am admittedly a gadget type of person too.

As egbertnr said he enjoys the extra options as most people do. the majority out rules the minority. So to make it afordable for the majority you will be forced to buy what you don't want. I personaly have never been a big fan of tilt stearing but I love crusie control. But you can't get one with out the other. The motor companys pair options that most people want been like that for years the day of option alacart left some time in the early 80's. Your choise is to buy cars like the Focus S and add your own stuff after or go with the flow with the higher end ones. My 11 se is loaded and I like it but I can fix it. and if at the time it brakes I can bypass certain options so for me I'm fine with it but can see why people would not want options like SYNC. Whitch I personaly think is one of the best new ideas. But Sirus raido is just crazy at $142.00 a year Normal price plus taxes or $95.00 plus taxes specail. And I asked about a life time account thinking it would be fine to have when I buy my next car but after taxes it is $800.00 and when you sell the car you loose it unless the raido breaks, car is stolen and not returned to you or wreaked. I'll take commercails even though I did enjoy the 6 month free. But now have that option in my car and will never use it again. The best part is if and when I sell the car how will I know if it will really work for the next person that buys it.

Posted via FF Mobile But doesnt that go for everything out there? I cannot think of one thing that has no gotten more complex since its introduction. Tvs, cars, planes, boats, computers, paint...food! It should be expected things are going to get more complex and have more "stuff" as the years go on. Oh and everything costs a lot more, not just cars.

Plus if Ford options everything individual, you can bet the cost of the car would be more anyway for manufacturing cost. They group it to help streamline the assy lines and make it for cost effective.

I think many new electronic features appearing on cars have considerable merit whether it's improved safety (like the Volvo City Safety system) or convenience (SYNC). But I also think there are some things that either go too far or are being introduced too soon, like MyFord Touch - and iDrive back in 2001, though it's pretty easy to use now.

I think advancing powertrain technology is a good thing, as it's allowing more and more powerful cars get better and better gas mileage. Heck, the 2012 Focus makes the same power as my 6-year-old Mazda and has an 8mpg better combined EPA rating, thanks to the dual-clutch transmission and direct injection. My only concern is the durability of these new technologies, especially the already glitchy Powershift.
