Tesla vs the world!

I find it hard to believe that a small company like tesla can produce better electric cars then every car company out there.

Tesla roadster 250 miles to a charger 0-60 3.7
Tesla model S four door 300 miles to a charge

Ford electric 100miles
Nissan electric 100miles

Am I missing something?

Yes the price is high on the roadster but that can he expected by any car with full carbonfiber body and aluminum chassis.

Not saying I would own an electric car anytime soon I'm just trying to figure out why big company's are dragging their feet while this smaller company is planning to have a car by 2014 capable of 450 miles to a charge.

The reason the distances on the Ford and Nissan are so much shorter is because of battery costs mostly. If both of the companies were to use the same battery technology that the Tesla has in their cars you would see the price of the Ford and Nissan cars go up much more than what they already are. It is more about cost economy and making the cars more available to the mass public rather than the upper echelon of money earners that Tesla is priced for.

the tesla gets nowhere near its 200 claimed mileage. or at least it didnt a couple years ago when it was released. Its weight is also a bit of a saving grace for mileage. it is quite a bit lighter than the ford and nissan due to all that carbon fiber. the only real weight is the battery packs. the focus and nissan have a complete family car wrapped around nowhere near as many packs as the tesla adding much more weight and reducing mileage. BTW ford and nissan both use the same li-ion battery tech that the Tesla does. just in a different approach

EDIT: Tesla Battery pack info
We started our design by purposely picking a small form factor battery cell. This cell is called
the 18650 because of its measurements of 18mm diameter by 65mm length (i.e., just a bit larger
than a AA battery). Due to its small size, the cell contains a limited amount of energy. If a failure
event occurs with this cell, the effect will be much less than that expected from a cell many times
larger. Billions of 18650 cells are made each year. Though the chance of a safety event in a
laptop is small, the number of safety incidents involving Li-ion batteries is rising each year
because there are so many more devices using small and powerful power sources.
The Tesla Roadster battery pack is comprised of about 6800 of these 18650 cells, and the entire
pack has a mass of about 450kg.

Tesla also makes 53kWh of power

FORD battery info(what little i found.

The battery pack is made up of 7 battery modules of 14 cells, 98 cells
total for 23 kWh of power. The batteries are air cooled using existing
vehicle cabin air. The pack includes an electronic monitoring system
known as the BMS that manages temperature and state of charge of
each of the cells

NISSAN Battery
The 24 kWh battery pack consists of 48 modules and each module contains four cells, a total of 192 cells, and is assembled by Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC) – a joint venture between Nissan, NEC and NEC Energy Devices, at Zama, Japan.[46][47][48] Since the battery is the heaviest part of any EV, Nissan housed the battery pack below the seats and rear foot space to keep the center of gravity as low as possible and also results in increased structural rigidity as compared to a conventional five-door hatchback.

I wouldn't take that Top Gear seriously. Especially since they're being sued, or were being sued at least, over false advertisement, since the Tesla never really ran out of power. It was just a part of the script to make it a point that the Tesla "doesn't work in the real world."

I agree that Top Gear should be held at more "entertainment" value than a factual program. I was just offering another viewpoint.
