MTX Fluid?

Hey guys,

I'm new here to Focus Fanatics. I've been driving my Focus for about five years now... and many things have continually gone wrong. I'm sure you all know about all the complaints with the older SE models.

Anyways, I'm working on fixing up my Focus... and up next is the Heater Blower Resistor.... but then I want to change the manual transmission fluid.

However, I'm having a really hard time finding an answer as to what kind/type of tranny fluid I should be using.

Is there anyone out there who has a definitive answer as to what brand/type of tranny fluid I should use? I'm a college student who depends on my Focus to get me from school to work. So I'm nervous when it comes to screwing up.

I know I could just take it in and get it changed, but I thoroughly enjoy fixing things myself... even though I'm mechanically illiterate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Unfortunantly the consensus is that the stuff you get at the dealer is the best. I say unfortunantly because its 20ish bucks a quart and it takes 2.

any car is good, and it is also a PITA...as was my old Taurus...I loved it but I needed it and it pissed me off a couple times.

Anywhoo, you might want to find out what kind of transmission you have in your car, some of the older ones had 2 different kinds of manual transmissions depending on the engine, where it was built, whatever. There is a FAQ at the top of the screen that may help!

If you have the MTX-75 (most common) you will need 2.1 quarts, so you will have to buy 3 bottles (bummer, I know). I agree that the dealer stuff is the best, but the newer fluid is fully synthetic with an ounce or two of magic potion in it which makes it good for 100,000 more miles so you don't have to do it for a long time.

Hope this helps!

Some of us use pennzoil synchromesh in our MTX-75. Only cost $8 each and I think my car shifts better then with the Ford stuff.

Part number for mtx synthetic tranny fluid at any ford dealership - Xt-m5-qs... For your first change you'll need to buy 3 quarts (roughly $75 after taxes)... However the good news, you'll only have to purchase 2 quarts your next 9 oil changes lol!

Good luck, I changed mine a few weeks ago, and it was such a difference!

I took my car in to the dealer to change it and they told me not to because I think the scheduled maintenance manual had no time line for it? I had originally thought it was every 30k miles lol. I think this stuff is supposed to last a life time or am I wrong?
