Can you believe this douche

http://www.thetorquereport.com/2011/...igher_gas.html

Quote:

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson recently had a two-hour interview with the Detroit News, in which he shared his opinion about the current gas prices and how the gas prices are pushing buyers towards more efficient vehicles.

Akerson is confident that the government will soon get rid of its remaining 26 percent share in General Motors. "I actually think the government will be out this year -- within the next 12 months, hopefully within the next six months."

One thing that Akerson would like to see the government do, is raise the current gas tax as part of its new energy policy. Akerson believes that a higher gas tax will force more people to buy small cars, which will do more than forcing automakers to comply with higher gas-mileage standards (CAFE).

"There ought to be a discussion on the cost versus the benefits," he said. "What we are going to do is tax production here, and that will cost us jobs."

From 2017-2025, the U.S. government is considering a 3 percent to 6 percent annual fuel efficiency increase, or 47 mpg to 62 mpg. According to current estimates a 62 mpg standard would add $3,500 to the price of each vehicle. If prices were raised that high, new car sales would see a significant drop.

"You know what I'd rather have them do -- this will make my Republican friends puke -- as gas is going to go down here now, we ought to just slap a 50-cent or a dollar tax on a gallon of gas," Akerson stated. "People will start buying more Cruzes and they will start buying less Suburbans."

Gas prices are already over $4 a gallon, so it will be hard to convince politicians to jump on board. Europe does have higher gas taxes, but it will be more difficult to institute in this country.

I have to say that I do agree with him slightly. It's hard to deny that the general public isn't going to move to smaller cars if their wallets aren't telling them too. Furthermore, it would give an extra boost to alternative energies if gas starts to cost more than them, hence bringing the cost of alternatives down due to higher demand. Now I am not saying we should jump on it now or ever but before anyone starts bashing it too much, we should at least think of all the long term benefits that may come of it. Advances never come without a little bit of pain.

He's a puppet. The Obama regime tells him to jump and he asks, "how high?"

Calm down! He is spouting the official GM line, which btw is quite OLD by now.
He, as GM spokesperson is not really asking for the Gov to raise taxes now is he (why would you ask for something that will never happen). Time to put on those thinking caps kids and figure it out.

I would actually not be totally opposed to this, although what I think might be a good idea is a flexible tax on gas that keeps the price at around $4-4.50 and adjusts when the actual price of gas changes (i.e. if gas by itself is $3.50 a gallon the tax is $1, if it's $4 a gallon only $.50). The price of gas would be higher but it would also be insulated from fluctuations. It's probably impossible to implement in practice though.

GM never should have been bailed out, they should have been allowed to fail just like any other lousy business. At the most, helped slightly to minimize job losses.
The executives got pay raises off of taxpayer dollars. What fool would give them any more money by buying a GM car?

I will never buy a Governmental Motors car. I didn't even consider the Cruze.
